New Jersey regulators are pushing a new rule that would make it harder for independent workers to make a living.
But workers are speaking out. They don't want this.

New from me:
I fully understand how incredible these findings appear to be, but it is fair to say that 99% of all written public comments are opposed to New Jersey’s proposed independent-contractor rule.
Here's the breakdown.

"California, under Gov. Gavin Newsom, enacted foolish reclassification legislation (Assembly Bill 5 or AB5). AB5 destroyed the livelihoods of 10.5% of self-employed Californians and plunged overall employment by 4.4% across over 600 occupations, according to Freelancers Against AB5. Entire professions dominated by women, such as transcribers, were wiped out. Now, other states like New Jersey are copycatting these policies. This is a disastrous labor policy, especially for women."

"Women want flexibility in different phases of their lives. Even if some women are leaving the 9-to-5, that does not mean they've left careers or gainful work."

In recent weeks, bipartisan resistance to the NJDOL’s proposed worker classification rule has intensified. There are now some two dozen state legislators who have taken a public stand against the proposed rule. https://t.co/LR5Nqgvw7X
NJ lawmakers announced their intention to introduce legislation that would declare the new Department of Labor and Workforce Development rules concerning the employment status test for independent contractors inconsistent with legislative intent, if the Department doesn’t respond to the public outcry and rescind or satisfactorily modify their proposed rule changes.
Both Democrats and Republicans in the Legislature have formally opposed the rule proposal and urged NJDOL to abandon the proposal.

Our response to the NJ DOL proposed IC rule:
This proposed rule is a direct attack on everyone’s fundamental freedom to earn a living as an entrepreneur, promulgated in remorseless defiance of our nation’s promise of liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

"Can labor policy get any worse than destroying flexible jobs and driving self-employed professionals out of work? California did this by cracking down on freelance and gig work, leading to devastating results for its independent workforce and small businesses a few years ago. Now, New Jersey is set to replicate this hardship in the Garden State."

New from me:
This public comment opposing New Jersey's proposed independent-contractor rule shows that harm is already occurring—particularly to women.

New Jersey state Senator John Burzichelli, a Democrat, adds his voice to the bipartisan chorus calling on NJDOL to rethink its proposed independent-contractor rule.
He's the 18th legislator in Trenton that I'm aware of who has spoken out as of this morning.
Tomorrow is the deadline to file public comments opposing New Jersey's proposed independent-contractor rule.

Three more Democrats just came out on the side of independent contractors in New Jersey.
Senator Diegnan is chairman of the state Senate Transportation Committee.
Thank you @PatrickDiegnan + @RKarabinchak + Assemblyman Stanley 👏👏👏
More NJ legislators are calling out the state's misguided proposed rule on independent contractors, saying it will "punish workers" and "literally cost people their livelihoods."

New from me:
State and federal regulators—even when they look for years—can't seem to find nearly as much misclassification as the freelance busters claim exists.
I find myself asking a question that I learned as a kid by watching TV commercials...

🚨🚨 Thank you to all three of my personal lawmakers in NJ's LD24--@MikeInganamort + @DawnFantasia_NJ + @parkerspace1--who just sent this POWERFUL letter to NJDOL urging total withdrawal of the independent-contractor rule
👊👊👊
NJ Independent Workers continue to speak out against this harmful proposed rule:
"Reclassifying financial professionals as employees would take away that independence, reducing choices for the families who come to us seeking financial protection and peace of mind...I urge the department not to take away the career that allowed me to serve the people in my community while helping me stand on my own two feet and raise my children."
