.@hackneycouncil: It is not too late to abandon this "reconfiguration" of our green space in De Beauvoir. It won't be an "improvement to the public realm". Downham Road West would deprive the surrounding residents (who mostly live in flats) of our nearest oasis of nature.
While we support new council housing, it is very disappointing that this development on the De Beauvoir Estate will involve cutting down mature trees and the loss of a significant amount of much-loved #greenspace near Downham Road and Southgate Road.
Last night, the planning sub-committee of Hackney Council voted to destroy our green space and fell our mature trees, in a move seemingly oblivious to the climate crisis and the wellbeing of existing residents.
Young trees are less effective than older ones in mitigating global warming, because their foliage is smaller and cannot absorb as much radiation. “A 100-year-old tree is worth 125 newly planted trees” in terms of absorbing carbon dioxide and cooling down its surroundings.
Ecocide must be an international crime. Whether it is the Secretary of the @USNavy or the CEO of @Chevron, persons who destroy our ecosystems and kill life must be held criminally responsible.

Factor in the fact that for every £1 @TheGreenParty spends, the LibDems spend £8, Labour spends £18 and the Tories spend £20, and these results are even more remarkable
Imagine what it could achieve with equivalent funding and air time?
This needs to be read and understood by every developer who says, 'for every tree, we will plant X more'. It doesn't work like that, ever:

Such a good point: excessive estate infilling inhibits democracy & community
Elmington Estate lost a TRA hall & communal green spaces as part of a council-led infilling / privatisation scheme in early 2000. Means residents now have less ability to meet & debate future proposals
Refuse development that would damage ancient woodlands, meadows, hedgerows or veteran trees; reduce the heritage significance of designed landscapes; or result in unacceptable loss of sunlight from green spaces.

I now believe that if I live into my 90s, I have a high chance of witnessing systemic environmental collapse.
By systemic environmental collapse, I mean something specific: an Earth system passing its critical threshold, then triggering the tipping of other systems.
I'm 58.
"This report from the IPCC is a litany of broken climate promises. It is a file of shame, cataloguing the empty promises that put us firmly on track towards an unlivable world. We are on a fast track to climate disaster" - @antonioguterres on the #IPCC report released today.

@enjoyLDNfields Hackney Central is suffering unprecedented congestion & pollution since the LF LTN and particularly because of main route Richmond Rd’s closure.
This ⬇️ is what E-W Graham Rd is like on a gorgeous day and everyday.
While Richmond is deserted and seeing very little cycling.
