@PerthMatth95459 @SamHeughan Hi Matthew, we are aware of at least 14 litters across 2024 and 2025, and the team have recently had confirmation of wild-born litters this year. Litters have ranged from one to four.

A wildcat’s jawbone is a different shape to that of a domestic cat. The sturdier formation allows them to hold onto powerful prey animals, like rabbits, more reliably.

Designed for wildcats 🐾

Produced specifically for wildcats, lightweight GPS-radio collars are vital for post-release monitoring 📡

When the battery runs out, the team try to remove or replace the collar. Eventually the weak link (pictured) typically wears thin and falls off.

Since 2022, Saving Wildcats and @CatsProtection have collaborated to neuter and vaccinate 132 feral domestic cats within the project area, protecting wildcats from hybridisation and disease.

Late winter is mating season for the Scottish #wildcat, also nicknamed the Highland Tiger 🐈 These usually solitary cats come together briefly between January and March to breed, with kittens born in late spring.

Rarely seen and famously untameable, the Scottish wildcat is an important predator of the Caledonian forest, but is threatened by interbreeding with domestic cats.

Thanks to the work of @SaveOurWildcats, wildcats are being released in the Cairngorms National Park to restore populations and help prevent the extinction of this iconic Scottish species.

Monitoring wildcat health post-release 🩺

A recent study examining the first year of wildcat releases, found that follow up health-checks showed few signs of injury or disease.

The wildcats also put on an average increase of 20% in bodyweight during the monitoring period ⚖️

@lilyregale We really appreciate your concern for the wildcats. Prior to the releases, the collars are fitted snugly yet comfortably by an experienced member of the team. Should the collar become snagged in any way, the weak link should break under pressure 🐾
