Prayer Flags have always been produced through purposeful use of available technologies and materials. Today, they embrace their digital future as NFTs. @nftnow@RubinMuseum@0xPolygon @polygonstudios @nftnow@decentraland@Krista_Kim
In contemporary times, prayer flags are largely mass produced in polyester. Though the intentions behind this is to make their prayers longer-lasting, it impedes their assimilation into the ecosystem. Our project cleans the mountains of the accumulating fallen polyester flags.
Acknowledging the importance of prayer flags’ natural decay within virtual space, the NTFs will interpret their impermanence by fading over the course of several months, reverting to their original state with each transaction.
For this pilot project, we collaborated with VAST Bhutan and the @RubinMuseum to create a collection of 1080 NFT prayer flags to spread good wishes and positive messages from Bhutan across the metaverse.
Sales of the NFTs will support the educational programs of VAST Bhutan as well as the cleaning of the mountains surrounding Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital-city, of accumulating fallen, faded, and entangled polyester prayer flags.
Our partner, VAST #Bhutan is a contemporary art collective and NGO co-founded in 1998 by Bhutan's leading contemporary artist, Asha Kama, promoting art and community service among youth. @czdorji
"The Prayer Flag Project" explores how virtual experiences can connect visitors to real communities to support and fuel local economies, while fulfilling and inspiring travel dreams from afar.
As a country that has always had a sustainable approach to tourism, #bhutan offers a unique case study for pioneering a purpose-driven prototype for virtual travel.
As we start traveling more consciously, the metaverse will offer an opportunity to mitigate the adverse effects of mass tourism, while more directly supporting and engaging with local communities.
Hello! We are a non-profit promoting cultural, social and environmental sustainability through the metaverse. We are excited to start telling you about our upcoming pilot project!
We sat down with Elena Pakhoutova, Ph.D., the Senior Curator of Himalayan Art at the @RubinMuseum in New York to learn more about the deep cultural roots of Prayer Flags, and their digital evolution as NFTs. Watch the full interview here: https://t.co/QMrHsZWB33
