I've discussed Bitcoin with around a dozen top scholars from around the world (incl Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, USA, Turkey and Pakistan).
Almost everyone either said it was permissible or they need to know more. Only 2 said it was haram.
Here are the reasons why and the counterarguments.
THE NO BENEFIT CLAIM
Some scholars said Bitcoin had no benefit and therefore cannot be considered wealth (this is Mufti Taqi's latest critique).
This is perhaps the most legitimate contention. The Malikis are the most lenient (saying it can be any benefit that is permissible). Acc to this view, the benefit of storing and exchange wealth which Bitcoin has makes them a permissible asset to purchase. The Shafiis are the most strict when it comes to what a benefit is (saying it must have a benefit other than storing/exchanging wealth). The Hanafis are in between.
But to limit yourself to one madhab in finance today is incredibly restrictive. Almost nothing would be permissible.
THE NO GOVERNMENT CLAIM
Some scholars said a currency cannot be legitimate until the government approves it. Neither the Hanafi nor Maliki school hold this position.
Imam Malik said "If people were to accept hides among themselves until they had a coinage/stamp and became currency, I would dislike that they be sold for gold or silver on deferred payment."
Goldsand's Hanafi scholar (who I also consider one of my teachers) @DrFarrukhHabib pointed out Imam Malik said if "the people were to accept" and he did not say the government has to mandate it.
Moreover, who said all cryptocurrencies have to be considered currencies in the shariah? Secular names don't always carry shariah weight. If riba were to be renamed "profit" by a bank, it would still be riba.
THE SPECULATION CLAIM
Some scholars say there is speculation in buying cryptocurrencies. Speculation in the shariah as jahālah (uncertainty). The examples fuquhā' give are buying "a certain bird flying in the air" or "a certain fish swimming underwater" meaning it is highly improbable that you ever receive the object. Or you don't know how much of the object you're getting.
When you buy 1 Bitcoin on a platform, you know you're getting exactly 1 Bitcoin. There is little to no uncertainty.
THE VOLATILITY CLAIM
Buying a volatile asset is not something inherently prohibited by the shariah. Nevertheless, a scholar may want to protect his listeners from losing their money so out of caution prohibits them from buying an asset.
But, Bitcoin, Solana and other digital assets with a historical record are the fastest growing asset class over the past 15 years despite their volatility. To prohibit customers from buying these assets would be to prohibit one of the best means for the ummah to gain wealth.
If a scholar has this fear they should prohibit meme coins and keep assets like Bitcoin and Solana permissible.
THE SIMPLEST ARGUMENT FOR PERMISSIBILITY
The chief qādi of Southern Algeria who had never heard of Bitcoin when I first discussed this with him gave the simplest checklist for knowing it is permissible:
✅ Is it pure? Yes.
✅ Is it permissible to benefit from? Yes, to store money.
✅ Is it explicitly prohibited by the shariah? No.
✅ Is their uncertainty what or how much you're getting? No.
Within 15 minutes of hearing about BTC and going back and forth with me, he said it's permissible. And this would apply to other similar cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, Solana, etc.

Not financial advice. Just payslip ki advice.
Silicon Valley’s real edge isnt just capital but also the permission to fail.
In Pakistan, one failed venture can cost you your reputation, your network, your family’s trust. So our most talented people never take the first risk.
You can’t build an innovation economy in a culture that punishes the first attempt.
I advise on Rs 6 billion+ Investments. And before we buy a single share, every company must answer the same four questions.
Not fifty. Just Four.
Most people think investing is about predicting stock prices.
It isn't.
Question #1: What is the actual ROIC of this business, this is what annual profit I will get if I remain invested in it for 15-25 years.
Question #2: Do I understand what actually drives its earnings?
Not the share price.
The business. The raw material prices, the final product prices.
Question #3: How does the money reach me?
This is where most investors fail.
A great business is not automatically a great investment.
As a minority shareholder, there are only two ways profits reach you:
Dividends. Or share price appreciation.
If you cannot explain how value gets transferred to shareholders, you are not investing.
You are hoping.
Question #4: Is this one of the best opportunities available?
We do not diversify into 30 ideas we somewhat understand.
We concentrate on our highest-conviction opportunities.
That's the framework.
Which of these four questions do you answer before investing as well? Tell me in the comments.
A dev in Pakistan has been billing the same Western clients for years. Last quarter, one came back with something different. Same project, they said. Roughly a third of the hours.
They had started using AI tools on their end. That dev still has the work. Just less of it.
Pakistan's IT exports have approached $5 billion. The 33 percent year-on-year growth is real. Two point three million people in this workforce, the fourth fastest-growing freelance market in the world. Genuine achievements, built over two decades of real work.
They were built on a gap. A senior dev here costs $28 to $40 an hour. The same work in the US runs $150 to $180. Western companies moved work east. Pakistan built an industry around it.
AI is closing that gap. One dev with the right tools now does what used to require several. The companies who used to need forty hours from Pakistan now needs fifteen. This is already showing up in the billing data of freelancers who pay attention.
Most of Pakistan's ~2.3 million digital workers have not received that message yet. They will. The question is whether they build something they own before the old model finishes contracting, or after.

Pakistan is not a market for the faint-hearted, but for allocators with a 3–5 year horizon, the KSE-100 offers a rare combination of deep value, strong earnings momentum, and a potential PE re-rating catalyst

Gemini Aggressive Alpha Fund:
The Gemini Aggressive Alpha Fund is explicitly designed to maximize capital appreciation by targeting structural market inefficiencies, deep valuation mismatches, and high-beta growth stories across the PSX. Rather than hiding in defensive, low-yielding conglomerates, this fund seeks out companies with massive operating leverage that stand to benefit exponentially from a stabilizing macro environment, declining policy rates, and sector-specific catalysts. It embraces regulatory, cyclical, and liquidity risks, positioning itself in beaten-down value plays trading well below their intrinsic book value or forward PE potentials, alongside hyper-growth outliers capitalizing on disruptive market trends. This is a high-conviction, high-volatility vehicle tailored for investors who want to outpace the benchmark index by capturing the sharpest, most aggressive rerating cycles the market has to offer.

The most financially literate people in the country often have the least examined personal finances.
You analyse companies for a living. When was the last time you analysed your own net worth?
I have met chartered accountants who can dissect any balance sheet in Pakistan, and have never built one for their own household.
Bankers who structure billion-rupee deals all day, and keep their personal savings in an account earning less than inflation.
Analysts who model five-year projections for listed companies, and have no projection for their own retirement.
It is one of the strangest patterns I see.
The most financially literate people in the country often have the least examined personal finances.
Not because they lack the skill. Because the skill is pointed outward, at work, all day, and there is nothing left over for the one portfolio that actually belongs to them.
So here is a simple challenge for you.
Tonight, do for yourself what you do for companies every day:
List what you own. List what it earns. List what it costs you in inflation.
And ask the question you ask in every meeting:
Is this investment working hard enough?
Most people in finance have never run that analysis on themselves.
The ones who do are usually unsettled by what they find.
When did you last sit down and analyse your own net worth the way you analyse a company at work?
