Taking a direct bullet to his head, he refused to fall. Bleeding profusely from a fatal wound, this young Ghatak Commander eliminated his fourth terrorist at point-blank range & dragged a wounded comrade to safety before taking his final breath.
Most men would instantly collapse upon taking a gunshot wound directly to the head. What this 25-year-old fearless officer did to annihilate an entire infiltration module in the treacherous mountains of Gurez earned him Bharat’s highest peacetime gallantry award.
On the midnight of August 20, 2011, around 0030 hours, Lieutenant Navdeep Singh, serving as the ferocious Ghatak Platoon Commander with 15 Maratha Light Infantry, received critical intelligence regarding a heavily armed group of 17 infiltrating terrorists in the high-altitude Gurez sector of Jammu & Kashmir.
Displaying masterclass tactical acumen,
Lt Navdeep swiftly analyzed the treacherous terrain, predicted the hostiles' exact infiltration route, and laid a deadly, silent ambush. As the infiltrating pack walked into the kill zone, the fearless young officer sprung the trap.
Leading the charge from the absolute front, Lt Navdeep engaged the hostiles in fierce, point-blank combat, single-handedly eliminating three heavily armed terrorists in rapid succession. Suddenly, spotting a fourth hostile maneuvering to target his men, he completely disregarded his personal safety and swiftly repositioned himself to neutralize the threat.
In that split second, a fatal enemy bullet struck Lt Navdeep directly in the head.
Despite sustaining a catastrophic, life-threatening head wound and bleeding heavily, his warrior spirit completely refused to yield. With sheer, superhuman willpower, he locked onto the fourth terrorist and shot him dead on the spot. Even while losing blood at a rapid pace, the gallant commander crawled through the heavy crossfire to physically drag an injured comrade to hard cover, continuing to fire his weapon at the remaining infiltrators until he fell unconscious.
His supreme valor and sacrifice broke the back of the massive infiltration bid, leading to the elimination of 12 terrorists in total.
Lt Navdeep Singh made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, attaining eternal immortality.
For his indomitable spirit, terrifying raw courage, and extraordinary leadership under fire, Lieutenant Navdeep Singh was posthumously conferred the nation's highest peacetime gallantry award, the ‘Ashok Chakra’
He proved that an Indian Army Ghatak commander fights past the point of death itself to protect his men and the motherland.

A mammogram missed her cousin's breast cancer. By the time it was found it was too late, and she died.
About 6 months later a second woman in the same family was diagnosed. She died as well.
The woman watching this happen was an artificial intelligence researcher.
Her name is Geetha Manjunath.
She grew up in Bengaluru. She took her bachelor's degree in computer science at UVCE, then a master's and a doctorate at the Indian Institute of Science, where she was a gold medallist.
Her first job was at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, where she was part of the team that built India's first commercial supercomputer in the 1990s.
She spent 17 years at Hewlett Packard Labs as a principal research scientist. She then became a lab director at Xerox Research in India, heading their data analytics research.
Then the 2 deaths in her family happened, and she went and read about the disease.
What she found is worth knowing.
In India, roughly half the women diagnosed with breast cancer die of it. Her own words are blunt. Every alternate lady detected with breast cancer is dying.
The reason is almost never the treatment. It is that the disease is found too late.
Mammograms are the standard test. They use x-rays, they are expensive, they are uncomfortable, they need a large fixed machine, and there is a specific medical problem with them. In younger women the breast tissue is denser, and dense tissue and tumours both show up white on the scan. So the tumour can hide.
That is what happened to her cousin.
She started working on it in her spare time, on weekends, with a small team, while still employed.
The idea was to use thermal imaging instead. A cancer uses more energy than normal tissue and the blood flow around it increases, so the area is slightly warmer. A thermal camera can see that heat pattern from a distance, without touching the body and without any radiation.
The hard part is reading it. Heat patterns are messy. That is where her actual expertise came in. She trained machine learning software to interpret them.
Their first test was with a medical college in Manipal, using thermal images of 72 cancer patients.
It worked.
In 2016 she left her job and started a company with a former colleague, Nidhi Mathur. They called it Niramai, which stands for Non Invasive Risk Assessment with Machine Intelligence, and which in Sanskrit also means free from illness.
The test needs no radiation, no touch, no pain, and no one else in the room. It works on women of any age and any breast density. The equipment is portable, so it can be taken to villages.
More than 400,000 women have now been screened across over 250 locations in India. More than 2,000 cancers have been found.
The technology has regulatory clearance in the United States and in Europe. She holds 14 American patents.
She has one line she repeats.
Nobody needs to die of breast cancer, if you can catch it early enough.
Her name was Shakuntala Devi.
She was born on November 4 1929 in Bangalore. Her father was expected to become a temple priest. He refused and joined the circus instead, working as a trapeze artist, lion tamer and human cannonball.
When she was three years old, her father was teaching her a card trick. He noticed she was not learning the trick.
She was memorising the entire deck.
He pulled her out of school and took her on the road. At six years old she demonstrated her arithmetic abilities at the University of Mysore before a stunned audience.
She received no formal education beyond a few months of schooling.
In 1977 at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, she was asked to calculate the 23rd root of a 201-digit number. She answered in 50 seconds.
The UNIVAC 1101 computer, for which a special programme had to be written, took longer to confirm her answer. It was 546,372,891.
She was correct.
On June 18 1980, the Computer Department of Imperial College London randomly selected two 13-digit numbers. They gave them to Shakuntala Devi and asked her to multiply them.
The numbers were 7,686,369,774,870 and 2,465,099,745,779.
She answered in 28 seconds.
The result, 18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730, was correct. Writer Steven Smith, documenting the event, wrote that the result was “so far superior to anything previously reported that it can only be described as unbelievable.”
Her name entered the 1982 Guinness Book of World Records. She received the official certificate posthumously in 2020, thirty-eight years after the record was set.
She had died in 2013, aged 83.
A circus performer’s daughter who never attended school outperformed the world’s most advanced computers.
India called her the Human Computer.
Most Indians today have forgotten her name.
