The Deodhani festival is an ancient three-day festival of ritual possession celebrated annually during shravan / bhadra months at the Kamakhya Temple, the foremost among shaktipeethas - the yonipeetha, where Sati's womb and genitals fell.

It is not mere coincidence that the grotesque imagery makes both the left-wing professional joker in QT below and progressive rightwingers deeply uncomfortable as they want to obliterate India's rustic side aka Dehat. As the corridor model of temple development becomes the norm, such age-old practices will be shut down to appeal to the mob of followers of this new nastika sect called 'Log-kya-kahenge Hinduism'. But Dehati festivals such as Deodhani have an intricate history and a delicate connection with the deities. Their destruction comes at a heavy though subtle cost, which often has consequences lasting centuries.

Deodhani is the festival associated with the worship of Manasā, as she is channeled through the oracles (Deodhas) by elaborate ritual possession techniques involving a rigorous, month-long regime of Niyamas by the Deodhas aimed at ritual purification of the body. The worship of the serpent deities goes back to pre-history. Possession as a way of communion with the deities is raw, visceral and unfiltered, whether it happens in Assam, Himachal, Kashmir or Chhatisgarh. It often takes a heavy, even irreversible toll on the body of the medium.

The Kamakhya Temple had disappeared for many decades around late 15th and early 16th centuries and the Swayambhu shrine was rediscovered by Biswa Singh, the founder of Koch dynasty. A temple structure was then reconstructed by Biswa's son, King Naranarayan, who brought Brahmins from Kashi, Mithila and other places to reframe and reinstate the complex ritual code needed for the worship of the great Goddess.

The Brahmins recognised the ancient relationship of the local communities like Bodos, Rabhas and Kaivartas with the Goddess and her divine troupe and created the space for them to worship them in their own unique way. Accordingly, for the three days of Deodhani, the "lower caste" dancers and oracles like the one in the video acquire a ritual status higher than the Brahmins and they perform acts such as dancing along the sharp edges of swords and offering prophecies to gathered devotees. In states of possession, they often consume the blood of sacrificial animals as they are no longer human but totally possessed by the deity. The Brahmins touch their feet and seek their blessings.

This is a classical example of high Sanskritic tradition shielding, systemising and honouring local ritualistic custom and communities. It is a sacred pact between the Brahmins and the so-called lower caste communities, held in place by their bloodlines as each generation is obligated to pass on the commitment to the next.

It is clear that the centuries-old sacred pact may not survive the prying eyes of the modern mob, who as agents of the white race, will issue sanctions of decorum, rationalism and animal welfare to meddle in the affairs of communities who never asked for their advice. The mob is so culturally blind that they fail to see the difference between random kids performing a vulgar dance on some item number and a complex act of ritual possession that is sanctified by tradition and involves a shift in the gears of cognition.

The mob appears ideologically divergent but is united in its hatred for what they call ooga-booga practices. For the Left, all of Hinduism is ooga-booga and a huge hinderance to Progress. For the Right, real Hinduism is under process and will be delivered by modernity as a package free of ooga-booga, marking the culmination of Progress. This march of progress will be documented in video format, one Instagram reel at a time.

Dear BJP,

These were your unconditional foot soldiers, the bedrock of your movement. For decades, they carried the flag of Hindutva and stood firmly behind you at the ballot box, asking for little in return except the protection and dignity of the civilization.
