United is supposedly talking to a third unnamed midfielder. Who is that?

I have no idea.

⚽️But it’s a bit interesting, if we plugged all available data into a machine with no preconceived notions — I think it would spit out a name NOBODY is linking us to.

Because there is one midfielder:
🔺In the Premier League;
🔺Who played in the CL last season;
🔺Who plays for a club which with we have stellar relationship with when it comes to transfers (3 transfers the last 3 years);
🔺Who we have had concrete interest in, in the past;
🔺Who can play as a 6;
🔺Who wants a move;
🔺Who is fairly experienced and has CL experience despite being under 25;

BUT who hasn’t been mentioned once in relation to United.

⚽️I think there is a good reason for that, this is not some kind of silly engagement farming. “Oh I broke the code”. But — there is actually another point I am trying to make.

Look at it from this perspective — we have Kobbie Mainoo and have signed Yuri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.

Now all of a sudden there are reports that we are looking to sign a defensive monster who can cover a ton of ground. This might sound logical — but it makes no sense to me. Because — if — we needed that player type, why have we constructed an inner midfield with 3 players who doesn’t fit that bill at all?

Like let’s say we sign Casemiro 2.0, and he gets injured for 6 weeks. Will we play with a flawed XI for 6 weeks?

No, the only conclusion I can come to is that Carrick is 100% prepared to play with a midfield consisting of Bruno plus 2 of Mainoo, Santos and Tielemans. It wouldn’t be a midfield that is less capable physically or defensively than the team winning back to back CLs.

If this is the case, I think it’s brave. I can’t guarantee that it will work — but it’s exciting.

⚽️So what I can’t help but to wonder — is if we aren’t looking for another midfielder that is fairly similar to the 3 we already have? If not — we are basically flunking our own transfer window.

And no, I do — not — think the player we are talking to is Enzo Fernandez. The player I was alluding to above. I actually don’t rate him that high to be honest.

⚽️I made a post about this earlier in the summer — Chelsea FC’s finances are truly in a terrible shape. I would not at all be surprised if they sold Caicedo for example.

The transfer fee for Enzo Fernandez wouldn’t be an issue — he is on the books for £52.3m and Chelsea would probably take £60-65m to get him off the books. Players earning as much as he is, isn’t going for much more (like Tchoumani or Camavinga).

Perhaps the wages could kill the deal — if we even wanted him to start with. Which I doubt. He is probably on around ~250k a week out of the CL if he plays a lot of games for Chelsea. CFC’s contract are heavily incentivized through bonuses — but it’s not completely tied to CL/EL. If you play a lot you get paid a lot. Players who sits on the bench earns much less.

⚽️But like — if you look at compareable players from a data perspective, one site mentions Elliot Anderson, Andrey Santos and Enzo Fernandez as being the most similar to Yuri Tielemans.

But ultimately — I just don’t think Carrick wants a douche like him. But you have to be impresses with how competitive he is.

⚽️But the reason I started to think about him is the above. Who is out there who fills the same criteria as Tielemans, Santos and Mainoo? Enzo is definitely one.

Angelo Stille is 100% another. But he is very similar to Mainoo/Tielemans. I think we want someone a bit more similar to Santos.

I do like Richardo Rios.

To be fair — Manu Kone also fits this bill.
