Much ado about the Shebaa Farms after Ahmad Sharaa mentioned them, in the context of Syria-Lebanon border (never formally agreed since both gained independence from France) not being a priority. I covered this in my book, here are main facts to remember:
- The tiny area was illegally occupied by Israel in 1967, like the Golan.
- The UN recognizes it as Syrian land. (Shebaa village is in Lebanon, Shebaa Farms are in Syria.)
- Israel's sudden withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000 (2 weeks before Hafez Assad died) meant Hezbollah needed occupied "Lebanese" land to justify continued resistance & not disarming (as per Taif Accord) as long as occupation remained.
- Syrian regime style was to not make formal declarations on issue while praising resistance; there was no ambiguity, however, it acted then as if area was Lebanese - at least until the revolution. In a 2008 visit to Beirut, then-foreign minister Walid Muallem said "Shebaa Farms are Lebanese territory."
- Apart the US (since 2019), the entire world recognizes the Golan, and the Shebaa Farms area in it, as Syrian. (Image below is sketch from French official Pierre Bart in 1937, during the French Mandate.)

Israel flattened Beirut in 1982.

Even US president then Ronald Reagan, who armed Israel, called Begin furious after seeing a photo of a 7-month-old baby with its arms blown off and said “It is a holocaust”.

They killed so many innocent people that the survivors had no choice but to pick up weapons.

Then Israel had the audacity to keep using “Self-Defense” excuse every decade.

Israel didn’t stumble into endless war. Israel built it. Brick by brick.

If you can’t tax billionaires and trillionaire because “its unrealized gains until they cash out,” then stop letting them leverage that wealth for loans, as collateral, or as equity.

If it’s not real enough to tax, it shouldn’t be real enough to leverage.

This is why we say the system is rigged in favor of the super wealthy. Abolish billionaires, tax them out of existence, protect working people.
