The Battle of Cherbourg was fought #OTD in 1864, a naval engagement between the USS Kearsarge and the confederate raider Alabama. The Kearsarge had been tracking the Alabama for two years, and finally caught up with her as she was receiving repairs in the French port. #CivilWar

Amazing re-dedication of the Kearsarge Memorial in South Boston today. The anchor was dedicated in 1930 to Navy veterans of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and WWI. After a major restoration, it's re-dedicated to all Navy veterans.

There’s a strong connection between the Kearsarge Memorial & people of South Boston. Next Tuesday there will be a new chapter to that relationship with the memorial rededication at 1130.

In addition to the new federal holiday of Juneteenth, June 19 is the date in 1864 in which USS Kearsarge famously sunk CSS Alabama off the coast of France in the Civil War. We’ll be rededicating the Kearsarge Memorial tomorrow just shy of 158th anniversary of this famous event.
