Pope Leo XIV in a very practical Lenten Message to all Christians says:
“I would like to invite you to a very practical and frequently unappreciated form of abstinence: that of refraining from words that offend and hurt our neighbor. Let us begin by disarming our language, avoiding harsh words and rash judgement, refraining from slander and speaking ill of those who are not present and cannot defend themselves. Instead, let us strive to measure our words and cultivate kindness and respect in our families, among our friends, at work, on social media, in political debates, in the media and in Christian communities. In this way, words of hatred will give way to words of hope and peace.”

The first recorded use of MERRY CHRISTMAS goes back to 1534 in a letter dated December 22 by imprisoned English Bishop John Fisher to lawyer and activist Thomas Cromwell. In his letter, Fisher—who had been in the Tower of London prison for eight months for refusing to recognize King Henry VIII as the “Supreme Head of the Church and Clergy of England”—asked for clothing and food, closing the letter with, “And this our Lord God send you a merry Christmas…” Nonetheless, St. John Fisher was executed the following year. The Church declared him a saint 400 years later in 1935.
We live as if life were never enough. We rush to produce, to prove ourselves, to keep up. But the Gospel teaches us that knowing how to stop is an act of trust that we must learn to perform. Life does not always depend on what we do, but also in knowing how to let go of what we have been able to do. #GeneralAudience
