The recent Coldcard RNG vulnerability incident, which resulted in over $88 million in stolen Bitcoin, has served as a major wake-up call for the Web3 security industry.
The root cause was strikingly simple: a subtle software regression error during a firmware update broke the call line to the hardware True Random Number Generator (TRNG). Instead of true hardware entropy, key generation fell back to a deterministic software PRNG based on timers and device IDs. This enabled attackers to pre-compute candidate key spaces and sweep funds without ever breaching the physical devices.
This incident clearly proves that even the most respected hardware wallets can fail when relying on a Single Point of Failure in their entropy generation pipeline.
Why is the Scafonix MPC architecture inherently immune to such RNG risks?
First, Scafonix utilizes the web-standard window.crypto.getRandomValues() API, which gathers hardware-level entropy directly from OS kernel drivers (CSPRNG). With a 256-bit entropy space, brute-force attacks remain mathematically impossible.
Second, and most importantly, our 2-of-3 Multi-Party Computation (MPC) architecture guarantees structural safety. A Scafonix wallet key is split into P1, P2, and P3 shares. P2 (the Identity Share) is dynamically encrypted and deterministically derived via authenticated OAuth session bounds, rendering it completely independent of client-side random number generators.
Even in an extreme edge case where a client-side device RNG is completely compromised and the P1 share is exposed, an attacker STILL cannot forge a valid signature without the dynamically protected P2 share.
True non-custodial security is not about blindly trusting a single device or brand name. It is about engineering mathematical frameworks where the failure of any single component cannot compromise the entire asset. This remains the core philosophy behind Scafonix serverless MPC.
