A mammogram missed her cousin's breast cancer. By the time it was found it was too late, and she died.
About 6 months later a second woman in the same family was diagnosed. She died as well.
The woman watching this happen was an artificial intelligence researcher.
Her name is Geetha Manjunath.
She grew up in Bengaluru. She took her bachelor's degree in computer science at UVCE, then a master's and a doctorate at the Indian Institute of Science, where she was a gold medallist.
Her first job was at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, where she was part of the team that built India's first commercial supercomputer in the 1990s.
She spent 17 years at Hewlett Packard Labs as a principal research scientist. She then became a lab director at Xerox Research in India, heading their data analytics research.
Then the 2 deaths in her family happened, and she went and read about the disease.
What she found is worth knowing.
In India, roughly half the women diagnosed with breast cancer die of it. Her own words are blunt. Every alternate lady detected with breast cancer is dying.
The reason is almost never the treatment. It is that the disease is found too late.
Mammograms are the standard test. They use x-rays, they are expensive, they are uncomfortable, they need a large fixed machine, and there is a specific medical problem with them. In younger women the breast tissue is denser, and dense tissue and tumours both show up white on the scan. So the tumour can hide.
That is what happened to her cousin.
She started working on it in her spare time, on weekends, with a small team, while still employed.
The idea was to use thermal imaging instead. A cancer uses more energy than normal tissue and the blood flow around it increases, so the area is slightly warmer. A thermal camera can see that heat pattern from a distance, without touching the body and without any radiation.
The hard part is reading it. Heat patterns are messy. That is where her actual expertise came in. She trained machine learning software to interpret them.
Their first test was with a medical college in Manipal, using thermal images of 72 cancer patients.
It worked.
In 2016 she left her job and started a company with a former colleague, Nidhi Mathur. They called it Niramai, which stands for Non Invasive Risk Assessment with Machine Intelligence, and which in Sanskrit also means free from illness.
The test needs no radiation, no touch, no pain, and no one else in the room. It works on women of any age and any breast density. The equipment is portable, so it can be taken to villages.
More than 400,000 women have now been screened across over 250 locations in India. More than 2,000 cancers have been found.
The technology has regulatory clearance in the United States and in Europe. She holds 14 American patents.
She has one line she repeats.
Nobody needs to die of breast cancer, if you can catch it early enough.

This organization is entirely dependent on external funding, which it uses to send money to its activists in target countries.

Neelima, married to Congress national spokesperson Pawan Khera, has since 2017 established a complete media ecosystem: Institute of Perception Studies, Rate the Debate, Hakku Initiative, and Studioadda.
These platforms have given space to 25-30 anti-BJP journalists between 2020-2025, such as Ashutosh (formerly AAP), Paranjay Guha Thakurta (who wrote foreign-funded reports targeting Adani). It is likely that these journalists will influence the pre-inquiry process for foreign funding.
Now comes the more problematic part - the founder of Proto controls the selection of their journalists for South Asia, while their brother
works on their Vision 2040 project with Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and also participated in violent CAA protests.
Saif ul Hadi teaches at the Indian Islamic Studies Institute associated with Jamaat-e-Islami. He developed the concept of Innovation Lab in Vision 2040 and runs it. And this foreign-funded media activity is directly linked to the Islamic political organization in India.
The division of tasks is deliberate - Nasr provides foreign funding to select journalists. Saif organizes Islamic activism at the grassroots level.
Kota Neelima Congress Party provides the basic framework for these journalists' pre-investigation and training.
Between July 2020 and December 2024, ICFJ published specific stories in India.
Each story focused on issues such as minority persecution, hate speech, arbitrary justice system, CAA discrimination, and the removal of Muslim religious sites under the Modi government.

His mother's job was to move her arm back and forth 9,000 times to make the thread for one saree. It took her about 6 hours. She did it every day for years, and her shoulders and elbows hurt so much that at night all she could do was rub balm on them and lie down.
Her son watched this happen from the time he was a child.
He dropped out of school in class 6, had no training in machines, and decided he was going to build one anyway.
His name is Chintakindi Mallesham.
He was born in the early 1970s in Sharjipet, a small village in what is now Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district in Telangana. His parents were handloom weavers. They wove Pochampally ikat sarees, and the money from it just about fed the family.
The part his mother did is called asu. It is the winding of silk yarn around pegs, and it decides the entire pattern of the saree. Nothing else in the process can begin until it is done. It cannot be skipped and it cannot be rushed.
For 2 sarees a day, his mother moved her arm around 18,000 times and handled roughly 25 km of thread.
He left school to help the family earn. Later he went back and passed class 10 after several attempts. He had no knowledge of mechanics or electronics.
He started building. He fixed parts onto a wooden frame, piece by piece. Most of it failed. Every failure wasted material and money the family did not have. There was a point when his own mother asked him to stop.
He went to Hyderabad and worked in a workshop, and spent his time watching how the machines there moved. Something in one of those movements gave him the answer. He came home and finished it.
The machine does the asu automatically. What took 6 hours now takes about 90 minutes. A weaver who could manage 2 sarees a day can now do 6 to 8.
He named it the Laxmi Asu Machine, after his mother.
Thousands of weaving families use it today. He got the Padma Shri in 2017, in the science and engineering category, without a single day of engineering education.
He has said the award mattered, but nothing matched the look on his parents' faces.
He is still working. He wants to fix the other painful parts of weaving too, so that the next generation does not leave the loom.
A boy with no schooling built a machine because he could not watch his mother rub balm on her arms one more night.
