Truth: Adult pads can be used on people of any age! But, be sure that the pads don’t touch each other — If the child is too small, place the pads in the centers of the chest and the back

Myth #5: I can’t use an AED in the rain or snow.

Truth: AEDs can be used in any weather condition! However, you should make every effort to get the person’s chest as dry as possible to ensure best adhesion of the pads and most efficient delivery of the shock.

Truth: AEDs can be used on everyone — infants, elderly, pregnant women, those with medical conditions, those with a pacemaker. If you believe someone is suffering from a cardiac arrest, use an AED!

Truth: most states, including Illinois, have Good Samaritan laws in place. This means that as long as you were acting in good faith and doing your best to save a life, no one can sue you for your actions

Myth #1: I can hurt someone by using an AED

Truth: an AED is safe and easy to use. There are built-in mechanisms to make them safe. If you place the pads on someone that does not need to be shocked, the AED will not shock them — it only shocks when it needs to.

Do you know the difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest? The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they are not synonyms. A heart attack is a “plumbing” issue, while a cardiac arrest is an “electrical” issue with the heart.
