COACHES: Be careful you don't get frustrated by the very things you are responsible for in your program. Your players will do what you allow, tolerate, permit, or accept. Fight for your culture daily. Reinforce and reward those behaviors that are important to you.
It can take years to create a culture in a team that knows how to lead, serve others, play for one another, find more solutions than problems, care for team more than self and genuinely love one another.
Once you have helped groom and grow this, the TEAM can make magic happen. ✨
Sports do not define you as a person. Athletic failure doesn’t make you a bad person, and athletic success doesn’t necessarily make you a good person. Always remember that you are more than just an athlete!
Being coached is a privilege. Never take your coaches for granted. Not everyone is fortunate enough to receive coaching. Be grateful for your coaches and take full advantage of their knowledge and wisdom.
Correction is not criticism.
I played for a great high school coach and I would constantly get asked how I handled him “yelling” at me. He wasn’t yelling at me. He was holding me to a higher expectation because he knew my goals !
Every team member is responsible for the culture of the team. Everyone owns a part in that culture. It's not coach's team. It's not the starter's team. It's not so-and-so team. It's everyone's team. Everyone should be invested in the process.
