AIR RESCUE MISSION: Late last week, the Sheriff’s Office helicopter, STAR 1, assisted the @SanJosePolice in finding a stranded hiker inside the Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve. The hiker reported that a mountain lion was stalking him while he was walking along the Boccardo Loop Trail. With limited cell service and unable to safely continue, he remained in place roughly two miles from the trailhead until help could arrive. STAR 1 quickly responded, located the hiker, and landed to bring him safely out of the area. He was not injured. Our Air Support Unit remains ready to assist partner agencies and respond to emergencies throughout the county at a moment’s notice.

FROM BOOTS TO BEHIND BARS: A man was caught stealing two pairs of boots from the Boot Barn in San Martin. He took off in a yellow Ford Fiesta, but deputies found the car in a nearby parking lot a short time later. The suspect tried to run but didn’t get far. Deputies recovered the stolen boots along with drug-related items and a removable license plate. They also learned he had a $50,000 warrant. He was taken into custody and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.

PAWSITIVE CONNECTIONS: Children at Early Horizons Preschool in Sunnyvale got a special surprise when our school resource officers, Deputies Harvey and Toruno, stopped by for a visit. And they didn’t come alone. Deputy Tran and his K9 partner Ollie, along with Deputy Perez and his K9 partner Vago, joined in too. The kids loved meeting the deputies and their four-legged partners, and the morning was filled with smiles, high fives, and plenty of petting time.
