On July 4, 1776, Independence Day, the Declaration of Independence was signed by John Hancock, the President of the Continental Congress, and Charles Thomson, the Secretary. Fifty-four other delegates had signed by August 2, 1776. The last signatures were affixed by early 1777.
The process started on June 7, 1776, when Richard Henry Lee proposed a resolution for independence. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston were appointed to write a draft. At only 33 years old, Thomas Jefferson took about 17 days to write the first draft.
July 1st through the 4th, Congress debated the document and made edits—removing a strong anti-slavery clause. Jefferson had included a strong condemnation of the slave trade and blamed King George III for promoting slavery and blocking colonial attempts to restrict it.
The document was adopted on July 4th.
The document doesn’t start with “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…” but rather with “The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America… it becomes necessary … to assume the separate and equal station…”
Read those opening words. Unanimous. Thirteen united States of America. This reminds us that together we are stronger.
So, on this day and every day, be reminded to be good to your fellow citizens. You may not always agree with them, but you are both united in this experimental bond of self-governance. It is our unity that gives us strength. Our independence and freedom are the greatest gifts we can give to our children and their offspring.
Governments and dictators all over the world look at us in awe, wonder, jealousy, and hate. People wish to come here, sometimes overwhelming our borders, because our way of life is among the best in the world. Let’s not squander it in division.

@EmilyCompagno A few weeks ago on Gutfeld, the talk was about another Chinese national doing biological research in the U.S., and you said we too often overlook these important stories and instead cover over-and-over the riots in places like Minnesota. I applaud that opinion. Then you spent the next two weeks on 'Outnumbered' talking about the kidnapping of Nancy, with over analyzation by every talking head you could find. Live up to your word. Find the important stories. Sure spend 5 minutes on Nancy, but the 5 spends 50% or more on this tragedy. (By the way, what about all the other missing persons in the U.S.?)
@HawleyMO@EricHolder don't forget with India's tariffs, we import more than hard goods. We import a lot of services. Software engineers, help desk, etc. We send a lot of money into their economy this way and they buy Russian oil. Boost up a tariff on that.
What war are we in? The one that ended a day after we got into it? Pipe down for everyone’s sake. Smart move if it ended the “war” earlier. Glen, u may not always be the brightest bulb in the room. Give me more facts and less drama. We bombed. A risk vs never ending war. Better today than last week. Admit it!!!
