Education providers can now submit training programs to become eligible for Workforce Pell! Workforce Pell helps students enroll in high-quality, short-term job-training programs by expanding the federal Pell Grant program. Training programs must align with high-skill/high-wage occupations and employer hiring needs, typically requiring 150-600 clock hours of instruction, and must meet strict labor-market performance benchmarks to participate. When education providers apply for Workforce Pell eligibility for their program, they can support students in acquiring the skills for in-demand, high-wage occupations, helping them enter these fields with the skills they need to succeed and positively impact our workforce!

The U.S. Department of Education established a framework for implementing Workforce Pell while delegating key administrative responsibilities to each state governor. Effective this month, Governor Henry McMaster assigned the Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) as the state entity responsible for facilitating the Workforce Pell eligibility process. In consultation with the State Workforce Development Board (SWDB), the South Carolina Coordinating Council for Workforce Development (CCWD) provides state-level approval for Workforce Pell applications. Participating institutions will then be able to submit their programs for final U.S Department of Education eligibility approval.

Between May 2025 and May 2026, South Carolina's labor force grew by an estimated 78,491 people, an increase of 2.9%, ranking first in the nation for labor force growth.

In fact, only New York and Pennsylvania added more people to their labor forces during this period, despite having populations 2.5 to 4 times larger than South Carolina's!
These numbers reflect the continued strength of South Carolina's workforce and economy.
