He gives you intelligent movement, relentless work rate, leadership from the front and the ability to link attacks. Those qualities don’t disappear because you’ve reached your thirties.

“Then there’s Jordan Henderson. His career speaks for itself. Premier League winner, Champions League winner, FA Cup winner, League Cup winner, Club World Cup winner and a captain who led one of Liverpool’s greatest modern teams. You cannot put a price on that level of leadership and experience.

“I actually think these two signings are more about what happens off the pitch than on it. Xabi Alonso has inherited one of the youngest squads in the league. Every training session, every team meeting and every difficult moment during the season becomes easier when you’ve got players like Welbeck and Henderson setting standards for everyone else.

“When pressure arrives—and it always does—you need players who have already lived those moments. Young players can lose confidence after one bad result. Experienced players steady the dressing room, keep everyone together and remind the team what winning habits look like.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if these end up being Chelsea’s smartest signings of the season. Maybe they won’t score the most goals or grab all the headlines, but they’ll improve the players around them. Sometimes the biggest signing isn’t the most expensive one—it’s the one that raises the level of the entire squad.

“That’s why I believe Xabi Alonso wanted them. Talent wins you games, but experience, leadership and professionalism often win you titles. By the end of the season, people might realise Chelsea didn’t just sign two experienced players—they signed two leaders.”

Listen, I totally get why Sunderland knocked back that €8 million bid for Granit Xhaka. When you’ve got a player like him — proper experience, leadership, that winning mentality — you don’t just let him walk out the door for anything less than what he’s really worth to the club.

People focus on the age, but Sunderland are seeing the bigger picture. This is a lad who steadies the whole dressing room, sets the standards every single day, and helps bring the young boys on, both on the pitch and off it. That kind of influence is priceless.

If Chelsea are serious about wanting that experienced head in their squad, they’ll have to go back with a much stronger offer. You can’t expect to get someone of Xhaka’s calibre on the cheap.

Look at the market these days — clubs are chucking €50-60 million at young lads with potential all the time. So fair play to Sunderland for holding firm on a player who’s already done it at the highest level.

From Chelsea’s point of view, I understand the interest — leaders like him are hard to find. But from Sunderland’s side, replacing what Xhaka brings in terms of personality and presence in that dressing room? That’s a different story altogether.

At the end of the day, this one’s not just about the money. It’s about how much both clubs value real experience and that winning mentality. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chelsea come back with a proper bid.
