Can the Flames go 28-17-4 in their final 49 games? That would be the .612 PT% needed to get to 93 pts, which based on projections today would allow them to pass Arizona for WC2 while also needing to pass/fend off the Blues, Wild, and Oilers.

It’s not great math, folks. Plus, that’s just to squeak in and a first-round date with either the best of the best of the dogfight going on atop the Pacific, or whoever wins the Central.

Calgary playing improved hockey of late is great, don’t get me wrong. This modest three-game winning streak makes for entertaining festive viewing, but I just don’t see it changing much in the big picture other than it won’t hurt the market values of the players being peddled.

No disservice to what they’re currently doing, the noticeable improvement in play the last couple months, the stingy goaltending of late, and the many excellent individual performances they’re getting, but the two predominant variables in the equation this particular season that have to be weighted more heavily are:

1. Quality of the surrounding teams. Three of the NHL’s top five teams overall (by PT%) entering Saturday’s games are from the Pacific. Six of the league’s top eight teams (i.e., Calgary’s first-round opponent should they get in) are from the Western Conference.

2. The unique season this is contractually. There are so many players who are pending UFAs. In any other season, I could see an argument being made to go for it and try to get in and see what happens. But with the number of high-calibre expiring assets the organization has gift-wrapped under the tree this Christmas, circumstances do matter and it’s serving up a golden opportunity that just can’t be ignored, nor squandered.

So enjoy the run that they’re on, have a great time watching them battle the Kings on the HNIC late game tonight as you wrap presents and enjoy copious amounts of rum and egg nog with family. Maybe they’ll even rattle off a couple more thrilling victories next week in front of big crowds of all ages at the Saddledome still basking in the holiday spirit. But keep expectations and hopes grounded in the reality of the unique circumstances of this 2023-24 season.

Now is this a message for the impassioned fan base or the front office? I’ll let you decide. 😉
