The richest man in America signed a document that could have gotten him hanged, and when someone sneered that he was safe because no one would know which Charles Carroll to come for, he picked up the pen and told the British exactly where to find him.
His name was Charles Carroll, and the colonies were crawling with men who shared it. His own father was Charles Carroll of Annapolis. So when the Declaration of Independence came to him for signing in 1776, a delegate made a cruel little joke. He said Carroll risked nothing by signing. There were so many Charles Carrolls that the King's men would never know which one to hang.
Carroll didn't argue. He leaned over the page and added three words to his signature: "of Carrollton." The name of his estate. His address. He was the only signer in the entire room who wrote down where he lived, and he did it on purpose, so that if the British wanted to come hang the traitor, they would know exactly which door to knock on.
That is who Charles Carroll of Carrollton was.
Here is what makes the moment even sharper. He was not a man with little to lose. He was the single wealthiest man in the thirteen colonies and the largest private landowner among them. While George Washington and John Hancock get talked about as rich men, it was Carroll who topped them all. When he signed, he was wagering the biggest personal fortune in America against a noose.
And he was the last man anyone would have expected to be there at all. Carroll was Catholic. In colonial Maryland, a colony founded as a Catholic refuge that had since turned on its own, Catholics could not vote. They could not hold public office. They could not worship in public. The most educated, wealthiest man in America was, in the eyes of the law, a second-class subject barred from the very government he was helping to create. He had spent seventeen years being educated by Jesuits in France and spoke five languages fluently, and back home he still could not legally cast a ballot.
So he became the only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence, putting his name on a revolution that he hoped would build a country with room for men like him. That was its own enormous bet, made by a man the existing system had already shut out.
Then he simply outlived everyone.
Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on the same astonishing day, July 4, 1826, exactly fifty years after the Declaration. When they were gone, Charles Carroll of Carrollton was the last living signer left on earth. For six more years he was the final human link to that room in Philadelphia, the last hand that had signed, a living relic of the founding that ordinary Americans traveled to see and shake.
He finally died in November 1832 at the age of ninety-five, fifty-six years after he wrote his address on a treason document and dared the empire to come find him.
The richest man in America. The only Catholic. The last one standing. He had more to lose than any of them, every legal reason to stay quiet, and he signed his full address anyway.
We remember the names we were handed in school. We forget the man who made sure his couldn't be mistaken for anyone else's.
Which Founding Father do you think history shortchanged the most?
Our Corporation Counsel needs to immediately halt the use of any @KimFoxx certificates of innocence!
The fact she allowed these criminals to manipulate her in order to get a certificate of innocence that our @ChicagoCityLaw used to justified taxpayer-funded settlements.
If this isn’t a crime, it damn well should be.
From Ken Blackwell over at FaceBook. GREAT read!
A thread.
1) No Kings explained for people who think they're fighting fascism.
500 groups. Three billion dollars in revenue. Pre printed signs stacked and shipped before you even knew what you were supposed to be mad about.
That is not a spontaneous uprising. That is infrastructure.
That is planning. That is money. That is message discipline.
And that is what you walked into on Saturday.
You looked around, saw the crowd, saw the slogans, felt the energy, and told yourself this was democracy. “No Kings.” It sounded clean. It sounded righteous. It felt like you were part of something organic.
But the signs were ready before your outrage was.
That should bother you.
Because you are not living under a king. You are living in a constitutional republic with elections, term limits, and a press that has spent years attacking the most powerful figures in the country without consequence. No one is being arrested for calling a president a fascist. No one is being silenced for dissenting.
That is not tyranny.
And yet you are being told it is.
You are being trained to see normal functions of a country as authoritarian. Loving your country becomes suspicious. Wanting a secure border becomes immoral. Believing parents should have a say in their children’s lives becomes dangerous. Asking basic questions about elections becomes taboo.
That is not clarity. That is conditioning.
Every country on Earth enforces its borders. Most require identification to vote. That is not controversial anywhere else. It is only controversial here because you have been told it should be.
And you believed it.
Meanwhile, look at the people who actually hold power and how long they have held it:
Chuck Schumer. 46 years. Longer than Stalin.
Steny Hoyer. 45 years. Longer than Mao.
Mitch McConnell. 42 years. 5x more than Napoleon.
Nancy Pelosi. 39 years. Longer than Henry VIII.
Maxine Waters. 35 years. Longer than Mussolini.
Bernie Sanders. 35 years. Triple Hitler’s entire reign.
That is what entrenched power looks like.
Decades. Not months. Not a single term. Decades.
But you are told the threat to democracy is the outsider who disrupted that system for a brief window of time.
You are told he is the king.
No. What you are reacting to is not monarchy. It is loss of control.
You do not hate kings. You hate kings that are not yours.
Because when power consolidates on your side, you justify it.
A sitting president steps aside. Within days, a replacement is effectively crowned without a real contest, without a meaningful debate, without voters having a say in a process that is supposed to belong to them.
No primary. No debate. No ballot.
And you said nothing.
Three days before you marched, lawmakers aligned with your movement rejected voter identification requirements. At the same time, you lived through a period where you had to show documentation to participate in basic parts of life.
You needed proof to eat, to travel, to work.
But asking for proof to vote is suddenly oppression.
That contradiction should stop you cold. Instead, it gets waved away.
Look at how power is actually maintained.
Non citizens are counted in the census. Census numbers determine representation. Representation determines power. Remove verification, expand the count, and you increase influence without ever needing a crown.
That is how modern systems entrench themselves.
Then look at speech.
There is written evidence of government officials pressuring platforms like Facebook to suppress information. Not just misinformation. Information that later proved to be accurate. Scientists were sidelined. Doctors were ignored. Even humor and satire were targeted.
Humor.
They call it the “dangers of police chases” to shift responsibility away from the only decision that actually mattered. When a uniformed officer signals you to pull over, the lawful and safe action is to pull over.
That rule exists in every civilized country with traffic laws.
There is no nation where fleeing at highway speed is considered compliance.
The danger does not begin with the lights. The danger begins the moment a driver decides to run.
A police pursuit is not an autonomous event. It is a reaction. The initiating cause is refusal to comply. Physics does not care about grief narratives or media framing.
At ninety miles per hour, loss of control is not a mystery and a light pole does not move. Blaming the officer is like blaming gravity after someone jumps off a roof. The chain of causality is clear, linear, and unforgiving.
What is really happening here is moral inversion. Obedience is reframed as optional, law enforcement is recast as the aggressor, and personal agency is erased to protect a comforting story.
If the signal is ignored, if the accelerator is pressed, if the wheel is turned harder instead of braking, the outcome belongs to the driver. That is not cruelty. That is objective reality.
The hard truth is simple.
Pull over and live.
Run and risk death.
The Almighty designed a world where actions carry consequences. Pretending otherwise does not honor the dead and it does not make anyone safer. It only teaches the next person that defiance is noble and physics will negotiate. It will not.
The prognosis is in. Mr. Wonderful should’ve been a doctor because he just accurately diagnosed half the globe as cuckoo. And if you’ve ever been around someone crazy, you know there’s nothing you can do. So, when we hear @AlGore say he’s living under the Third Reich, he must really believe that because he believes he invented the internet. It’s people like Gore who can’t accept reality, who can’t accept that @realDonaldTrump won. These people have convinced themselves that when they’re not in power, they’re going to die. Or, if you don’t do what they tell you to do, like buy an electric car, you’re going to die. But nobody’s dying.
They keep saying we’re on the brink of a recession, but the CEO of Chevron says, “No, we’re not… we’re not even close.” They said the world was going to side with China, and China was going to eat our lunch. So why are countries flying here to do deals with us? They said we couldn’t just “shut down the border” without Congress. That was a lie—he did it. Trump is the first president in 40 years to cut waste, fraud, and abuse. Democrats are jealous that he’s doing things they ran on and never did. Their dirty little playbook was to say they were going to do stuff, never do it, and then keep running on it again and again so they can be politicians for life and then get rich insider trading and taking half the week off. But Trump’s fixing the problem and finding their fraud, so the jig is up. So, when they say the world is going to end, yes, their world is ending. Their reality is over, and they never thought it would happen, so they’re having a hard time coming to grips with reality.
I’m not going to mention the names or parties. I know as soon as I do, all rationale disappears. I’m just going to paint the pictures and let you fill in the blanks as to who the characters are, and where you find yourself in this as well.
At some point, people have to put down their hatred for the man. You mean to tell me that you can only allow yourself to see and post what you perceive to be bad about the man based on a narrative driven by politics that was carefully fed to you since 2015?
You can’t even put down you anger about a man, you don’t truly know, and what you do know was carefully put together by the same people who praised and admired him before he challenged your anointed ones?
You honestly can’t give him credit for bringing border crossings down?
Can’t give them man props for allowing Americans to see how their hard earned tax dollars were being wasted and laundered? And the crazy thing is, the folks wasting it have NOT denied it, nor did anything to stop it But you aren’t mad?
Can’t give him a little grace, as he tries to undo the damagege done by the previous administration.
Will not bring yourself to acknowledge the lies and gaslighting the previous administration told us all, and shockingly was ready to vote for more of the same.
You can’t acknowledge that inflation is dropping (which is acknowledged by news sources that hate him as well)
Can’t bring yourself to appreciate that he is stopping the destructive affirming that allows children from mutilate themselves while they are still growing.
Once so called peace loving people want a war to continue just because of who the man is trying end it, knowing if it was one of his rivals doing it you’d call for a Nobel prize for them.
You are upset that what his detractors wanted you to believe about him failing when he just got in office, is no longer being blindly accepted by the country. You don’t care if it is factual or not. You just want to believe the worst of him so bad.
Can’t even be honest enough to give him props for responding to people suffering in NC, when the previous administration believed all they deserved was $750.
As we speak, the elected officials you celebrate as champions against tyranny, are being exposed for what they truly are, crooks, cons, grifters and individuals with zero solutions to the many issues we face (on both sides), and you are more upset at the man showing you who they truly are and exposing their hustle?
Do you realize that he already knew who they were? He donated to their campaigns years ago, remember?
Knowing all of their screaming, yelling and political theatrics has absolutely nothing to do with resisting a “dictator”, but more to distract from what is being revealed to us all. You are okay with the gimmicks and emotional hijacking. The dancing and cheesy videos being done by those who have been in power for decades and never solved a damn thing. In fact they made it worse.
You aren’t going to even consider that two men are sacrificing their brands, their reputations, both who went from heroes to villians, who could be sitting at a beach somewhere minding their damn business, instead, have chosen to risk it all, may actually care about our nation.
I can respect a difference of opinion. What I can’t respect is minds (even great minds I know and love) who can’t think critically beyond their hijacked emotions. It is hard for me to understand minds that can’t even acknowledge the good while pointing out the bad.
These mindsets remind me of a sex worker who was rescued from a pimp, and is crying about being away from the pimp who was exploiting her. Even worse, you are more angry at the person who shows you that you were being pimped.
You refuse to even listen to logical differences of opinion, dismissing them as cult members, and uneducated.
If you find yourself in this diatribe, I think you need to change. Not agree with everything, but change.
Remember, Joe Biden with the full support of Senate Democrats fired more than 8,000 service members who refused to take an ineffective COVID shot.
And make no mistake: this was a political purge that damaged our national security.
This was how our police vehicle looked last night after an impaired driver slammed into the back of it as the officer was helping a disabled motorist. Move over, slow down, don't drink and drive. Or smoke marijuana. Or mix pain pills with driving and drinking and smoking. Thankfully, our officer was not seriously injured.
This debate is such an unmitigated disaster for Joe Biden and the Democrats that Merrick Garland is already putting together a grand jury to indict Donald Trump for elder abuse.
