What if we stopped killing, imprisoning, and censoring our truth-tellers and started listening to them instead? When I was growing up, Martin Luther King, Jr. was the textbook example of an activist who used the written word and civil disobedience to advance the causes of peace and freedom. King, of course, was murdered for his work.

Edward Snowden walks in King’s footsteps. @Snowden is still alive and unforgiven. Unforgiven for what? Do we even remember? My new book, VETERAN ACTIVISM AND THE GLOBAL WAR ON TERROR, invites everyone around the terrorized world to consider six literary profiles in courage. Edward Snowden, @PhilKlay, @elliotackerman, Kristen Beck, Kevin Powers, and Joseph Hickman all dared to speak up about America’s Global War on Terror and the culture of fear that emerged from Bush and Cheney’s invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as our opening of a torture gulag in Cuba. During this same time period (which is ongoing…We are still in Iraq, Gitmo is still open), America also launched a new unconstitutional global surveillance regime, which Snowden, while working for the NSA, revealed. Was he a hero for doing so? A traitor? A mere gadfly?

My great hope for VETERAN ACTIVISM is that it will lead you to read the books of these courageous veterans. For starters, I hope you will read PERMANENT RECORD by my fellow North Carolinian, my fellow American, and my fellow inhabitant of the one planet we all share: Earth. If you feel the same way I do (that Snowden is a profile in courage), I hope you’ll follow his example and speak up. I hope you’ll ask your presidential candidates (@realDonaldTrump , @VP , @CornelWest , @DrJillStein ) to also read Snowden’s story and consider a pardon for this man.
