Schmigadoon was one of the worst musicals I have ever seen on Broadway.
The same joke over and over. The same song. Over and over. The same choreography. Over and over.
It was truly painful to sit through.
Yes, a lot of Broadway shows have numerous co-producers and investors who support all kinds of political positions. You’ll find plenty of republican co-producers on many shows. But this is different.
Unlike most of her previous Broadway activity, Schwarzman is not simply a co-pro, investor or backer of SchMAGAdoon, she is a LEAD producer. She gets handed the trophy and the microphone if it wins. She IS the show. The Fox is in the henhouse and for some reason people want to give it an award.
Her millions, over many campaigns, has directly led to the nightmare we are experiencing in the country and in the world right now.
For more than a decade she has written checks to elect the single biggest destroyer of art. The renaming and subsequent closing of the Kennedy Center, the gutting of public funding for the arts, and the targeted defunding of PBS. To name a few. And after all of that she throws on her diamonds and parties with HIM at the White House days before she accepts her Tony nomination as Schmagadoon’s lead producer. It’s gross.
(His atrocities span far beyond the destruction of art, but this is theater related so I’ll keep it focused, but we all know his record with the LGBTQ+ community, racial minorities, immigrants, and women.)
And the issue is not that she’s rich. We need wealthy and powerful backers to take risks on shows. The Obamas with Proof. Tyler Perry with Joe Turner’s. Kardashians with Fear of 13. Clinton with Suffs. Angelina Jolie with Outsiders.
Theater is expensive and risky to make. So we need deep pockets to keep the lights on.
And I am not dragging the show’s amazing artists like Gattelli, Chase, Brightman, or Cinco Paul, their work stands separate. Up to a point. But they knew who they were partnering with and questions should be asked of everyone.
But setting all of that aside, there is no doubt that the last person we need to be awarding a Best Musical Tony to is Schmigidoon and its lead producer Christine Schwarzman. A woman who has spent more than a decade throwing her name and money behind a man dedicated to destroying an art form we love, an industry on the brink, and the communities that support it.
This is exceedingly worse than Nicole’s red hat moment or Chenoweth’s Kirk comment. This isn’t some isolated poorly worded flub on social media.
Schmagadoon takes the crown from Queen of Versailles as this year’s “MAGA musical.” Christine Schwarzman has done exponentially more to support Trump than Jackie Siegel could ever dream of doing.
Give it to Two Strangers, Titanique, or The Lost Boys. I don’t care. Or give it to none of them. Give it to Maybe Happy Ending again. Bring back Real Women Have Curves and give it to them.
We can’t compete with her billions, but we can take a stand as a community and deny her one of the few things we still have control over (for now), the platform and prestige of being the lead producer of the Tony winning Best Musical. Schmagadoon can’t win.
They’ve encroached on every aspect of our life up until now. They can’t have this too.
And, to be clear, none of this is conspiracy nonsense. It’s right there. She’s a lead producer on the show. And she has been a public and staunch supporter of Trump and his movement for more than a decade. Even after all of the damage he’s done to the country, the world, and the arts. To this day, she’s right there with him. And now she wants Broadway to give her the Tony for Best Musical.
It’s time to wake up. Supporting this show is supporting MAGA. Awarding this show is awarding MAGA.
Christine Schwarzman, the lead producer of Schmigidoon, is Trump’s largest donor for the past three election cycles.
She was at the White House as Trump’s guest for the state dinner just days before the Tony nominations came out.
We CANT give HER the Tony and microphone this year!
@broadwaycom Are we really giving Schmigadoon’s lead producer, Trump’s top donor Christine Schwarzman, a Tony for Best Musical?
She has given him millions for more than a decade. As he’s gutted the arts and attacked our entire community. This is disgusting!
@PeteAscolese Just the lead producers. The ones who run the show. Who get the microphone on Tony night. Who manage and control every aspect of the show.
@PeteAscolese She’s the lead producer. Not a co-pro. Not an investor. Lead Producer. And Trump’s top donor.
Not just some Republican. Top donor
This is her first Broadway show as lead producer and it should be met with the resistance. We shouldn’t embrace a woman who finances hate against us.
@PeteAscolese What? The show’s lead producer is one of Trump’s biggest donors. So we just don’t care about who we are supporting and highlighting anymore?

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE BROADWAY COMMUNITY:
I think it is time we discuss Schmigadoon and its direct connection and contributions to Donald Trump.
Schmigidoon’s lead producer is Christine Schwarzman, “No Gaurantees Productions” is her company, she and her husband were listed as the 7th biggest Republican donor by the Washington Post back in November after giving millions to Trump’s multiple campaigns over the years.
At the end of April, literally days before the Tony nominations were announced, SchMAGAdoon’s billionaire lead producer was a VIP guest of Trump’s at the White House state dinner in DC.
This is who the industry is thinking of awarding its highest honor to in June. What are we doing?
