Today marks my 7 year anniversary on Twitter. Given how this app changed and especially seeing the behavior of its current owner, this will also be my last post here. You can still find me on other apps, more info in seperate comments :)
Join us on November 8th at 5 pm at Polyterrasse for an important student assembly. In collaboration with Speak Up! and 500 WS, we’ve prepared a manifesto responding to the recent Tagesanzeiger article ("ETH is shocked").

With Oswin Aichholzer, Anna Brötzner and Daniel Perz we study a flip graph on crossing-free almost perfect matchings and show that this flip graph is connected.
🚨OPEN PhD position🚨
I am looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join my project group in the Department of Machine Learning and Systems Biology @MLSB_Borgwardt led by @kmborgwardt at @MPI_Biochem near Munich. Deadline November 15th.
Please RT.
In my Intro to Programming lecture today I asked how many students still know „Gangnam style“ and I was pleasantly surprised that most of them do. The generational gap is not as big as I feared!
The call for papers for #SoCG25 is online!

I have the honor to be on the program committee this year, so please send a lot of interesting papers :)
Have you ever thought about starting an open access mathematics journal? If so, you may be interested in a project that has just been announced to provide such journals with startup funds of up to $10,000, as well as advice from experienced people.

Friends, as the saying approximately goes: "Fortune favours the bald" 👴
👉 My proposal "HOLES: Higher-Order Learning of Essential Structures with Geometry and Topology" was successfully funded with a 1.5M € @ERC_Research Starting Grant! 👈
🤯🤯🤯
This will allow me to pursue my research in #geometry, #topology, and #MachineLearning! 🍩
I'm very excited, in particular after the great feedback by the reviewers! Attached is the picture of a happy and lucky PI! 😁
Having moved to @unifr 🇨🇭 recently, I'm grateful that @SBFI_CH has options for funding even though Switzerland was a nonaffiliated country when I wrote this grant last year (with a baby 👶 on my lap, no less).
(it's a shame that 🇪🇺 and 🇨🇭 did not arrive at an agreement that covers submitted grants, but I hear the negotiations are going well otherwise)
🚨 Again, I'm hiring soon at all levels, so please share this widely! 🚨
Today is the day for ISAAC 2024 notifications. Just as Julián Mestre and I were about to send the emails, https://t.co/XvdoXslIAO failed to load. Some hours later, we still can’t reach the site. We’ll try again Tuesday morning Sydney time. Thank you for your patience! #ISAAC2024
The other one was written by Tiago Oliveira Marques, a summer intern in our group the last two months. I was really impressed at his speed in grasping new concepts, and the paper he wrote in these two months came out nicely, with some really cool results.

Two new preprints on the arXiv today that I want to advertise. The first one comes out of the master thesis of Linus Stalder, which I supervised together with Simon Weber.

In it, we give a poly-time algorithm to unfairly split certain necklaces.
Today is my first day at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Basel (@UniBasel), where I‘m starting a 75% lecturer position. I‘m really looking forward to this new challenge.
