'If Ethanol Costs More Than Petrol...': Tehseen Poonawalla Targets Modi Govt Over E20 Policy

Political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla has criticised the Modi government over its ethanol blending policy, citing a written reply by the Union Government in Parliament. He claimed the reply confirms that ethanol costs more per litre than petrol, questioning why costlier ethanol is being blended with petrol if the stated objective is to reduce costs. Poonawalla also alleged that sugarcane farmers receive limited financial benefit, while ethanol distilleries are the primary beneficiaries of the policy. He further questioned the government's claim that ethanol blending helps conserve foreign exchange, alleging that India imports industrial ethanol from the United States despite having domestic production capacity. Describing the policy as an "ethanol scam", he demanded answers on who benefits from the current ethanol blending system.

Appearing for the petitioners, Senior Advocate Hariharan N submitted that "brutalities to the largest measure possible" had been inflicted on peaceful protesters. He took the Court through the sequence of events, detailing the alleged instances of police excesses, and placed video recordings on record in support of the allegations.
