Larry Madowo asking Kenyans to “cancel” him is actually a very dangerous game for someone whose public profile was built largely through television before social media turned that visibility into followers.

Many journalists confuse a huge audience with a loyal personal following, yet a good part of that audience originally came from the media house, the prime-time slot, the interviews, the clips, the breaking stories and the daily exposure that came with being on television.

Kenya has seen this before, where journalists looked massive when they were sitting behind the desk at Citizen TV, NTV, KTN or K24, then left the station and suddenly found out that getting people to follow you is very different from getting people to watch the platform carrying you.

Anne Kiguta was once one of the most visible political interviewers on Kenyan television, yet after leaving mainstream prime-time television, her independent visibility never matched the reach she enjoyed when major stations were putting her before millions of viewers every week.

Enock Sikolia himself spoke about how people he considered friends disappeared after he left Citizen TV and started The Kenyan Historian on YouTube, which tells you how quickly the ecosystem around a television personality can change once the big media machine is removed.

Lynn Ngugi saw this trap and before people associated her with Tuko, she built her own social profiles and is very big on Youtube.

That is the real test......

Can you leave the television station, lose the cameras, lose the newsroom, lose the constant promotion, start from your own platform and still command the same attention several years later?

If you have never really passed that test, baiting people to cancel you for laughs is risky, because one day you may find out that the numbers you thought belonged to you were partly rented from the institution that made you visible.
