From Rejected Manuscript to #1 on Netflix: The Power of Backlist Books - Adewumi Idowu Paul

Fourteen years. That is how long it took for Sue Nyathi’s 2012 novel, *The Polygamist*, to become an overnight global sensation as Netflix’s viral number-one series. When Sue wrote the book, major publishers turned it down. Undeterred, she took a leap of faith and decided to self-publish, believing in her story even when the traditional gatekeepers didn’t. Fast forward to today, and the world is finally catching up to her brilliance, proving that a great story will always find its way.

As library professionals and book advocates, this incredible journey reminds us that good stories do not have an expiration date. A book published over a decade ago is just as relevant, gripping, and marketable today as it was then. This is the ultimate testament to the magic of the "backlist." We don't always need to chase the newest releases to captivate our communities; sometimes, the most powerful narratives are already sitting quietly on our shelves, simply waiting for their moment in the spotlight.

This phenomenon also highlights the vital role libraries play as discoverability hubs. When traditional publishing closes its doors, indie and self-published authors rely heavily on libraries to help readers discover their work. We are the ultimate champions of these independent voices, providing a platform where merit weighs heavier than a major marketing budget. By keeping diverse and self-published titles in our collections, we ensure that the next groundbreaking story isn't lost to obscurity.

We can easily leverage this viral moment to promote our collections and engage our patrons. Now is the perfect time to create "Page to Screen" displays featuring *The Polygamist* alongside other indie books that made it big. By highlighting self-published authors in our library marketing, we can remind our communities that genius doesn't always come from a major publishing house, and that their next favorite @netflix binge is likely waiting for them on a library shelf right now.

Call for govt intervention over deteriorating state of Ekiti State Library Board By Adewunmi Paul

I want to raise an alarm over the deteriorating condition of the Ekiti State Library Board. In recent years, the state of the library system in Ekiti State has been in decline, with inadequate funding, outdated facilities, and dwindling resources. My worries reflect the growing frustration among citizens who recognise the pivotal role libraries play in fostering education, culture, and societal development.

The Ekiti State Library Board, once a beacon of knowledge and learning, now struggles to fulfill its mandate due to various challenges. Over the years, budgetary constraints have led to neglect, resulting in dilapidated infrastructure, insufficient staffing, and a dearth of updated books and resources. As a result, the once vibrant hub for learning and research has become a shadow of its former self, unable to adequately serve the needs of the community.

As a resident of Ekiti State, I recognise the critical role that libraries play in empowering individuals, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering intellectual growth. The current state of the Ekiti State Library Board not only undermines these objectives but also deprives citizens of essential resources for personal and professional advancement.

In the light of the pressing issues facing the Ekiti State Library Board, I call upon the government to intervene urgently. The government must prioritise the revitalisation of the library system by allocating sufficient funds, upgrading infrastructure, and enhancing the library’s resources and services. Additionally, I urge the government to engage stakeholders, including educators, librarians, and community members, to develop a comprehensive plan for rejuvenating the library board and restoring its status as a cornerstone of education and culture in Ekiti State.

By investing in libraries, the government demonstrates its commitment to education, enlightenment, and the well-being of its citizens.
