This is true even for senior postdocs on the TT market, let alone an undergrad.

@debbb_ho Even though I was about to be a senior without any experience (“old” in undergrad RA terms, apparently??), my PI hired me and 1 other student. I didn’t start research until the summer before my senior year and fell in love with it & that’s how I ended up with a PhD.

Why?

Because I can’t afford to not work. Some of us do not have the luxury to take breaks and when we talk about mental health and well being THIS IS IT.
