I wrote a thing!! In this review, I propose that we need to focus on sex-specific signal integration & transduction between experience-dependent plasticity and neuroimmune activation at the synapse to better understand memory in health and disease. ๐งต

Big news! I will be joining the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences @DartmouthPBS this Fall! My lab will study the neural circuits and physiological states that regulate appetitive and aversive motivation.
Another milestone for @UmichQMSS with our first-ever Hackathon! I was pleasantly surprised by how many students wanted to spend a Friday afternoon scraping, cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing data, and even more impressed with what they accomplished!! ๐
This month, QMSS held our first-ever #hackathon! Thanks to Dr. @ACavari's brilliant idea, his thoughtful planning, & help from Dr. @koredeajogbeje & QMSS Peer Mentors, it was a huge success! Below are some trends about the 2024 US #election from Hackathon teams using real #data:
@ehaswell @GarciaLabMS @YashaExplores @WUSTLdbbs There is just no amount of warning or preparation thatโs going to make a small room full or even a 3:1 ratio of faculty be something a candidate is not stressed out about - first-gen/URM or not. This is true even for senior postdocs on the TT market, let alone an undergrad.
@ehaswell @GarciaLabMS @YashaExplores @WUSTLdbbs My interview cohort had spent a LOT of time on grad cafe (which I didnโt know about, thankfully) & could not stop talking about how terrifying the panel was going to be despite having a shocking amount of info about it from other people. 2/
@debbb_ho ๐ thank you!! All because of pure happenstance! I wouldnโt have found that lab or opportunity without a randomly forwarded email from someone who was confused about how they got the email in the first place. So random and lucky!
@debbb_ho Even though I was about to be a senior without any experience (โoldโ in undergrad RA terms, apparently??), my PI hired me and 1 other student. I didnโt start research until the summer before my senior year and fell in love with it & thatโs how I ended up with a PhD.
@debbb_ho ๐ me!! One of my engineering friends from freshman year shared a job ad for an RA position in a new neuroscience lab our junior year. His engineering prof shared it with his class and he was like uhhh this is not engineering and heard I liked neuro so he forwarded it.
Mr. Brightside - @thekillers song about jealousy & a crumbling relationship - became a hype song of all things for @UMichFootball. Somehow the @Phillies also found a hype song in Dancing On My Own despite a similarly sad theme. How did it end up like this?

I used to love to read. Now I'm in my Phd, and I read so much for school. The last thing I want to do is read more. So, I veg out in front of the TV. Anyone else temporarily lose your love of reading when you are in your PhD? I hope to go back to reading for fun when I graduate.
A Harvard professor has been accused of falsifying data for experiments about dishonesty. Oh, the irony! QMSS Blog Editor Connor Zahler breaks down the riveting @DataColada findings in simple terms in Part I of his coverage on this quantitative quandary.

@bielleogy My favorite section is titled (Donโt You) Forget About Microglia. I also gave a talk once that I titled based on this same song: Donโt You Forget About Me (when your brain gets sick). This is the twitter thread Iโve been waiting for!!
Today marks the 54th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots - a huge catalyst in the fight for equal rights for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals. To commemorate this day & Pride Month, we highlight & celebrate their voices in data science.

I took two weeks off between undergrad and graduate school then one week between completing my PhD and starting my postdoc.
Why?
Because I canโt afford to not work. Some of us do not have the luxury to take breaks and when we talk about mental health and well being THIS IS IT.
