Let me tell you about dry thunderstorms.

They are one of nature's most dangerous weather phenomena. Unlike a typical thunderstorm, they produce thunder, lightning and often strong, gusty winds, but little or no rain reaches the ground.

The reason lies in the atmosphere itself. Rain forms high within the storm cloud and begins falling toward the surface. But when the air below is extremely hot and dry, much of that rain evaporates before it reaches the ground. This phenomenon is known as virga.

The danger comes from the lightning.

While the rain may evaporate, lightning still reaches the surface. A single strike can ignite dry grass, shrubs and forests. With little rainfall reaching the ground and winds often increasing around the storm, fires spread rapidly.

As the climate continues to warm, hotter temperatures are drying out vegetation and increasing evaporation in many regions. That means landscapes become more vulnerable to fire, and when lightning arrives without the rain, the consequences are devastating.
