Dr. James “Lee” Annis inspired generations of Montgomery College students to see history—and their place in it—differently. Read more about his impact at MC at https://t.co/wgRRDpMXWU
For nearly four decades, Professor Annis brought history to life, connecting ideas, people, and perspectives in ways that challenged students to think deeper and aim higher. He believed in the potential of every student—especially those forging their own path—and created a classroom where curiosity, respect, and real dialogue thrived.
His impact reached far beyond campus. Through lectures, panels, and community conversations, he brought learning into the world—reminding us that education is not just about understanding the past, but shaping the future.
Professor Annis leaves behind a legacy defined by purpose, connection, and an unwavering belief that things can be better.

A journey that started at Montgomery College—and led around the world.
Montgomery College alumna Stephanie Rotolo (Class of 2013) shows us what’s possible when determination meets opportunity. Starting at Montgomery College without a clear direction, Stephanie found her purpose, stepped into leadership, and built a career in public service that took her across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East—including a role with NATO in Italy.
Now back in Maryland, she’s reconnecting and giving back through the @MCAlumniAssoc.
“Montgomery College is where it all began. I would not be the person I am today without MC.” #MontgomeryCollege @StudentSuccess #MCAlumni

Montgomery College alumnus and professional actor Alie Karambash spoke passionately and eloquently at yesterday’s @MoCoCouncilMD meeting in support of MC’s theatre arts program. “A renovated Theatre Arts Building would be a promising investment for the students at Montgomery College who will become our region’s next actors, producers, set designers, and sound technicians.”
We also thank our current theatre arts students: Juliana Quirino Norman advocated, “By supporting Montgomery College’s theatre arts, you are supporting access, equity, and opportunity for students to find their voice and career in the arts.”
Eli Schreiber said, “MC’s performing arts department is brimming with life. We need relevant, modern, and safe classrooms, labs, and stages in order to move into the professional theatre world.”

"When education and culture work together, communities become more connected, more resilient, and better prepared for growth. This doesn't just enrich lives—they shape place, attract investment, and help communities evolve with intention."
Powerful words from Katie Hecklinger, Montgomery College alumna and CEO of @BlackRockCenter , who testified before the @MoCoCouncilMD on behalf of MC's Theatre Arts program.
Her advocacy highlights how the arts don't just transform individual students—they strengthen entire communities.
Thank you, Katie, and Councilmembers, including Natali Fani-González and @MarilynBalcombe, for championing the vital role of arts education in our region's future. What role do you think art plays in building a stronger community?
