Five years ago, I was called to the Bar in Ghana. Like the journey through law school, I looked ahead with uncertainty, unsure how I would survive in a profession that often appears structured for those with connections and silver spoons.

But as the Akan proverb reminds us: “Ɔkwantufoɔ sika nkyɛ akomam” (no matter how long the journey, a traveller’s provisions will never seem sufficient.) Yet, providence endures and has endured through the benevolence of family, friends and mentors.

Along this journey, my path has crossed with people who have committed their lives to giving. Mahmud Ahmed Sam, who paid my first Ghana School of Law fees; Dr Simon Rozer Ofori Ametepey, a constant senior brother and mentor; and Mr. John Mantey of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders, who continues to treat me as his son. Without you, this journey may never have begun and even if it did, it may have died prematurely.

I am grateful to Senior Dennis Adjei for giving me my first exposure to law firm practice as an intern and for everything you taught me, and to @JusticeSremSai, my pupil master, for allowing me to continuously learn at his feet.

This year brought me closer to Dr. @RainerAkumperi1 and Prof. @HKwasiP. Though our paths crossed only recently, you both granted me unimpeded access to your time, wisdom, and experience. For that, I am deeply thankful.

Finally, and certainly not least, I thank Justices Sedinam Kwadam and Ellen Lordina Mireku for the training, counsel, and mentorship.

They say prosperity at the Bar begins after five years. I stand ready to experience this now. More importantly, I hope to be useful to my country and profession.
