Im not sure how that relates to my point…
My point is that Gettysburg didn’t lose the South the war, I’m not even sure I believe Gettysburg is the turning point in the war. It was a good Union victory at a time when they couldn’t afford another Chancellorsville.
New Orleans, The emancipation, Vicksburg, Grant going east, Atlanta falling and Sheridans Shenandoah campaign all more significant to the outcome of the war than Gettysburg.
In terms of strategy, a large artillery bombardment followed by an assault against a lightly fortified position was a tactic Napoleon had used and one Lee had observed in Mexico under Scott whom he also greatly respected and drew from. Those are places where Lee often drew inspiration for strategy.
Rifling compounded, the lack of threat from Ewell and the new fuses the confederacy was using which made the artillery bombardment ineffectual made this decision disastrous on July 3.
Many historians agree that the closest the confederacy came to getting suitable terms and recognition from the federal government was 1864. Gettysburg didn’t lose Lee the war. That’s something we tell middle schoolers to make the civil war easily digestible.
Meade lets him off the hook and at the time many in the north view Gettysburg as just a massive missed opportunity. It was a damaging loss in terms of manpower and especially to confederate leadership but by May of 64 he’s back up to almost 70k.
A very important battle but overrated in modern times.
@ChiSoxFanMike I’m doing the same thing. It’s not even just that but isn’t it a shorter deal? If he’s a beast and this continues no way they pony up and pay him what he commands.
