@DrHelenFry My grand-uncle was a private in the RAMC. He was reported missing after his troopship, the SS Laconia, was torpedoed off West Africa on September 1942 (which led to the notorious โLaconia Incidentโ)
@paullewismoney Canโt help with the actual play/film, but the prints in the background are from a series of Dickensian characters painted by Frank Reynolds for Buchananโs Whisky, which were first printed in 1927.
@MartinSLewis How about a cash ISA that drip-feeds into a linked S&S ISA? (e.g. start with 80% cash & 20% stocks, and transfer a small sum to the S&S ISA on a regular basis (while keeping under the yearly ยฃ20K limit at all times)?
@findmypast Iโm descended from the 2nd to last of the 11 children (that I know of) that my 2x great-grandmother had from her three marriages. Another 2x great-gran had 9 children from a single marriage.
@findmypast My Welsh surname comes from my grandfather who was born near Bedwellty just before the First World War. I think it used to be in Monmouthshire; nowadays itโs part of Caerphilly borough council.
@findmypast This also cleared up another family mystery. Various family members in this branch of my family have a rather unusual middle name. It turns out this was my (actual) 3x great-grandmaโs maiden surname!
@findmypast Found out my 3rd gt-grandma was actually 2 women in one! Turns out both had the same 1st name, and when the 1st one died my 3x grandad married again within months, giving me no clue I was researching 2 different women! (Iโm descended from the 2nd one)
@findmypast Just wanted to add that of the 7 bigamy cases I mentioned above, a total of 10 people were convicted; 5 were soldiers, and of the remaining five three were women, one of whom had โremarriedโ while her husband was away fighting at the Front!
@findmypast Well, the judge who sentenced my GG-uncle remarked that โbigamy had become very frequent [especially] among soldiersโ (uncle had been discharged from the Army the year before) and that โthere had been nearly 500 cases of bigamy in the past 12 monthsโ!
@findmypast Thanks. I actually found this item in your newspaper collection last weekend when it was free to view (I already have another photo of my great-uncle in uniform but this one is much clearer).
