Supply Chain 101.

If you’re not an enthusiast for Supply chain, you may stop reading at this point, the post will be long.

When you get to any store, whether Tech, FMCG, Pharmaceuticals, Manufacturing & you always see what you need, this is not magic, there are some people putting in the work, it means, the companies supply chain teams are sourcing correctly & on time materials needed to produce those items and because of that you get your finished product when you wanted it, your finished products might be mobile phones, drugs, vehicles, gadgets, soap, just anything you can think about.

Just like the QS ranking of Universities or Forbes ranking of Billionaires, there’s an agency that ranks Top companies producing excellence in Supply chain every year, the name is Gartner, on the 17th of this month, they dropped the top 25 as it’s their habit.

But before I dwell on the 25, let me talk about the Supply chain Masters (P&G, Unilever, Apple, Amazon)- They’re called Masters because they’re the yardstick for Supply chain organizations, so they’re not ranked amongst the top 25, they ranked in excellence more than the 25, on average, they deliver to their customers with >98% accuracy; you can see why they’re called Masters, check for yourself their products if it’s not readily available in your country of residence as and when needed.

Back to the 25, when thousands of companies are ranked across the globe & you’re top 2%, then you need raise your collar, if you’re part of the supply chain workforce of these 25 companies, celebrate yourself, you are doing something right.

For non supply chain enthusiasts who struggled to read to the end; I have somehow explain what supply chain does in my explanation but I’ll do that again with a layman definition: Supply chain is simply the art of buying & selling; you buy raw materials to produce your own finish goods & then make it available to your consumers through various means. When your consumers get what they need as and when due; then you have perfected your supply chain.

I have been thinking about how Banks and Mobile Money providers can better protect customers during theft or carjacking situations.

Imagine this:
A customer has their normal PIN, but also a duress PIN. For example, if the real PIN is 2244, entering 4422 (the reverse) silently signals distress.

What happens next?
-The system displays a decoy balance (e.g. 100 bob).
-Withdrawals and transfers are limited.
-The account is silently flagged on the bank’s end.

No alerts, no alarm, just quiet protection

In high-risk situations, customers are often forced to unlock phones or banking apps. A solution like this gives them a way to comply without escalating danger while still protecting their funds.

Similar “panic codes” already exist in security systems so why not in everyday banking and mobile money?

This could significantly improve customer safety,
fraud prevention and trust in financial institutions.

I’d love to see banks, fintechs and regulators explore ideas like this especially in regions where these risks are real and frequent.
