Two years ago, this gallery, art center and artist studio space named after the beloved mayor, Thomas Menino invited me to jury a drawing exhibit. I accepted.
In my early years right after graduating SVA, while I was building my portfolio, sending out postcards and doing drop-offs for illustration work in NYC, I was also sending my work into various galleries and arts centers in New York. Within the first three or four years after graduating, by the mid-90s, I had over 20 group shows and a solo show under my belt.
Many of these exhibits were through these local arts councils and arts centers. Through these shows, I met many local artists from all walks of life and disciplines and some of those artists I've met, I am still friends with to this day. We all were around the same age and we all have grown and came up together over the last 30 years. It's always a delight seeing them announce their next show or work.
While I've moved along from most of the local gallery scenes, when I was offered to jury the drawing show, all of those memories came back and the realization of how important all of those early shows were to me and my career. While I sold a piece here and there, I can't say that it was financially lucrative but I really learned a lot about the business and pushed me to develop my work more.
A few months back, Sasha Lucas, Director of the Menino Gallery contacted me and asked if I would like to curate an illustration exhibit. With my thoughts about those early shows still rolling around in the back of my head, I accepted.
I decided to focus on local illustrators to not only support them but also show visitors we have some world class artists here in Massachusetts. I am hoping that their work hanging on this small gallery walls will inspire the next young generation of artists and illustrators and that they will take a chance and enter the next juried show or develop new relationships because of it.
It's my pleasure to announce that 'Art For The People: An Illustration Exhibit' opens this weekend and will run until April 4th. There will be a reception March 22nd at 4pm.
Artists include: Abe Tena, Alan Witschonke, Bob Maloney, Collin McCormack, Dale Stephanos, Dave Seeley, Ed Shems, Gary LaCoste, Greg Ruth, Hal Mayforth, Irena Roman, James Weinberg, Jannie Ho, Jason Cheesman-Meyer,John S. Dykes, John Rego, John Roman, Jordan Awan, Katia Wish, Katie Wahn, Michelle Stevens, Nicole Tamarin, Rich Pellegrino, Rob Dunlavey, Sanika Phawde, Scott Bakal, Wes Bedrosian and the artists of Yellowfly.
Obviously, I would've liked to ask the other 100 illustrators and friends on my list to be part of the exhibit but there is only so much space. My apologies to them.
I look forward to seeing all of my Massachusetts friends at the opening! <3
A side story: the print shop who printed the posters created a vinyl poster to hang on the front of the building with other posters they print on view in the downtown area. It seems to be the only one that keeps getting stolen! I guess some folks are taking the show title literally! Or its just a great piece by Alan.
Thanks to all of the artists: you've honored me by unhesitatingly saying 'yes' to be part of the show. Much love to you. <3
Dim Stars: The Object zine is available in the shop. Only 171 copies have been made available.

For the last 16 years, I've participated in the Giant Robot Post It Show! This year is #20! Thanks to Mark Todd and Eric Nakamura for the incredible hard work organizing and selling thousands of small pieces for each show.
It's not a huge money maker for me although, I am honored to sell out nearly every year. It is great to sit down and just pop out small little pieces off-the-cuff for the show. I treat it like a sketchbook.
I'll only have six Post Its and one 10" square piece in the show this year.
Good luck to all involved! <3
This painting will be featured in the upcoming 'Plenty' exhibition at the 13 Forest Gallery in Boston opening this Saturday the 23rd.

My poster 'Keep Abortion Legal' is now in South Africa.
Since it's creation in 2016, it's been to dozens of venues from galleries to universities to major museums around the world. Thank you to my dear friend Elizabeth Resnick who curated the show and her dedication to poster design and social justice. From her recent post:
"The Women's Rights Are Human Rights traveling poster exhibition was included in the world’s first Global Artivism Conference, which took place in Pretoria, South Africa, from 05 to 08 September. The conference explored the dynamic intersection of the arts and activism, highlighting the pivotal role of creative expression in advocating for societal and environmental issues.
The conference, themed "Artivism: Embracing Cultural Activism for a Safe and Just World," emphasized the vital role of creative expression in promoting social and environmental change."
