A powerful message from @ChristoffDTodd on the moral, spiritual, and societal perils of gambling. I was grateful to hear him quote my recent story in @TheAtlantic, but mostly I was just grateful for his wisdom on what I think is an urgent issue.
@ttorres Agreed, has completely changed my workflow. I now live in VS code with Claude code and can togggle other CLI agents (codex, Gemini, copilot) on anytime I need or want to as well. Building out my syllabi, course notes, data analysis, research and almost everything else I do.
In philosophy, there is a distinction made between "knowledge that" and "knowledge how."
"Knowledge that" isย a knowledge of facts: I know that Paris is the capital of France.
"Knowledge how" is a skill or ability: I know how to ride a bike or I know how to analyze data using Excel.
LLMs have gotten really good at "Knowledge that"
A week ago, Claude dropped "Skills" which are pushing LLMs further into "knowledge how" territory.
I just spent some time exploring and testing this new feature within Claude Code and it's simple but profound. "Skills" are basically stored prompts that Claude can automatically pull into context "just-in-time" when it needs them to give you a better response. These "stored prompts" can contain detailed instructions for "how" to do something.
Examples of skills provided by Claude are:
1. pdfย skill - A PDF manipulation toolkit with instructions for extracting text and tables, creating new PDFs, merging/splitting documents, and handling forms
2. xlsxย skill - Create, edit, and analyze Excel spreadsheets with support for formulas, formatting, data analysis, and visualization
3. brand-guidelinesย skill - Apply your brand colors and typography to any artifacts you create.
It's possible to create custom skills by filling in a template like the following:
----------------------
name: skill-name
description: A clear description of what this skill does and when to use it
---
# Skill Name
[Add your instructions here that Claude will follow when this skill is active]

This is a very clever way of giving an LLM a sophisticated "memory" of how to do a certain kind of task.

@RyanQualtrics โIf people were to turn their thoughts and reflections to the operations of their own minds, they would readily discover that it is faith, and faith only, which is the moving cause of all action, and that without it, both mind and body would be in a state of inactivity.โ
@MittRomney@SenatorRomney@BurgessOwens@MikeLeeforUtah could you please have someone from your offices contact me to discuss the FRA action to suspend the train quiet zone from Provo to Ogden? Research and common sense both suggest public safety risk is now likely higher.
@LehiCity do we know an estimate of how long it will take for the 900 N train crossing to become compliant with new train safety standards so the quiet zone can be reinstated? Anything we can do to speed up the process?
