Happy Great Fire Day. On this day 118 years ago, James Weldon Johnson saw huge plumes of smoke in LaVilla and jumped on his bike to rush back and try to save Old Stanton. #ilovejax
In honor of National Poetry Month, the Expressionists invite everyone to attend the annual Celebration of Voice open mic on April 25 in the Black Box. Please come support the beautiful artists at Stanton! 💜
return to your pens and paper,
return to the fire, that passion
born in youth, forged from
the beautiful hunger to enlighten,
your dreams nurturing each flame.

some days I try to imagine myself as
someone else;
I picture my life different from this,
filled with the sacrificial suffering experienced by people better than me;
they are resilience personified,
endowed with blessings
far exceeding my own.
—@ljk93#NationalPoetryMonth
when we are together
there is no time,
this life, with all of
its many movements
slows to a crawl–
in those moments
I see you,
the reality of my life,
sharp, clear;
you are a reflection
in my eyes.
—@ljk93#NationalPoetryMonth
today, I planted an oak tree
in your honor;
its roots, tender and new,
sank into soil you now share.
today, the day that claimed you,
is a doleful reminder
of a life unspent—it is pale and cold,
a semblance of sorrow
born from your absence.
—@ljk93#NationalPoetryMonth
you cannot hide
behind your mask for long,
those cracks, little fissures
in your façade will soon show–
crevices will tear and open
and peel away a veil
no longer remaining
to hide you.

where there are words
there is hope
and freedom
in each line and loop;
where there are voices
there is light,
a stark illumination
piercing night,
beckoning the lost,
guiding the stray.
