@kevinjonheller There was a LOT of tension surrounding this year's elections.
The celebrations, albeit rowdy, reflect intense relief at not losing or, for unopposed, not getting a low vote.
Those who lose have a lot of explaining to do at home & carry a sense of failure @ UN sometimes for years.

💺 Seating in the 🇺🇳 #UNGA Hall follows English alphabetical order, but who gets the coveted number 1 spot?
🗳️ Following the @UN Secretary-General’s annual drawing of lots, Morocco 🇲🇦 will occupy the first seat of #UNGA81.

Add another thing onto the UN's growing list of "untenable" woes: decrepit chairs in the UN General Assembly Hall!
@UN_PGA has announced a new voluntary fundraising drive to replace them.
My quick sleuthing from yesterday's UN photos included.

Kyrgyzstan at the @UN Security Council for the first time. Looking forward to close work with Austria 🇦🇹, Portugal 🇵🇹, Trinidad 🇹🇹 and Zimbabwe 🇿🇼. 🙏 UN Member States for the credit.
Congrats to all new UNSC member states. I look forward to working with each of you closely to continue advancing important policies for the protection of children in conflict & to end and prevent any violations against them @childreninwar#ProveItMatters
Seeing big picture explaining of UNSC elections, but if 5-6 more UN members had voted for Germany not Austria, they would have gone to second round (as many diplomats expected) with less certain outcome. NOT saying final result would differ but these games pivot on fine margins.
Team 🇦🇹 congratulates the newly elected members on the #UNSC for 2027-2028 🇿🇼🇹🇹🇰🇬🇵🇹! Looking forward to working with you & the whole membership, in the spirit of partnership, dialogue and trust. Sincere gratitude and appreciation for all the support 🇦🇹🤝🇺🇳

The public hearing (interactive dialogue in UN-speak) for Secretary General candidate @mfespinosaEC will be held on Monday, June 15 at 3 pm in the Trusteeship Council. It will be live streamed on UNTV. The other candidates - Grossi, Bachelet, Grynspan, Sall - had their hearings at UNHQ in April.
On 29 May, @SCRtweets (SCR) co-organized, together with @GermanyUN, @AfricanUnionUN, and the #UN Secretariat a discussion on the operationalization of Council resolution 2719 (2023), focusing on mission support modalities for #AU-led peace support operations.
Hosted at the @AfricanUnionUN and co-sponsored by the #African members of the Council (#A3), the event featured introductory remarks by Ambassador Zenon Ngay Mukongo, Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the UN and A3 Coordinator; Ambassador Thomas Zahneisen, Acting Deputy Permanent Representative of Germany to the UN; and Nathalie Ndongo-Seh, Director of the Western Africa Division in @UNDPPA and @UNPeacekeeping. Participants also heard presentations from @ZAlghali, Senior Advisor at the AU Permanent Observer Mission to the UN, and Vanessa Kent, Chief of the Support Partnerships Service in the UN Department of Operational Support, who shared insights on the development and implementation of AU-UN mission support modalities. The discussion concluded with remarks by Ambassador Mohammed Edrees, Permanent Observer of the African Union to the UN.
SCR’s Chief Operating Officer, @Klimenop, moderated the event, helping to facilitate an exchange of views on how the #AU and #UN can work together to ensure rapid deployment and effective mission support under the framework of resolution 2719.
We thank all participants for their valuable contributions to this timely and important conversation about the practical application of the Joint AU-UN Mission Support Planning Modalities and ongoing efforts to operationalise resolution 2719.
