ワールドツアーを終え数日経ち生活はいつもの調子を取り戻し始めた。パソコンの前に座り、外国で出会ったキャンドルや、頂き物のバンドデシネや、なんとなく買ったが正味使う機会もなさそうなショットグラスを傍目で眺めながら、滞っていた仕事の続きを始めている。出国する前からすると幾分か暖かくなった気候に合わせてカーペットをしまい部屋を綺麗にしたので、ツアーの終わりも相まって部屋には心地よい解放感がある。窓の外の空を飛行機が飛んでいる。

公演期間じたいは今年始めからの3ヶ月程だったが、準備期間を含めば半年以上ツアーと向き合っていたことになり、恐らく自分の活動史上こんなに長期間ライブと向き合ったのは初めてだろう。正直なところ始まる前は非常に���劫だった。あの頃のわたしは折り重なる他の仕事との糊代部分を見失い、歪でチグハグな16面体のサイコロみたいな身体になっており、丁も半もクソもねえと内心毒づきながら生活を送っていた。締め切りがびっしり赤い文字で記されたカレンダーを見て、湯婆婆が千尋の名前を奪ったシーンみたく赤い文字がペリペリ剥がれていって真っ白にならないかしら、と他人事みたいにぼんやり考えていた深夜を思い出す。

うだうだ言ってても何度か寝て起きれば赤い文字で記されたその日は必ず来るもので、眠い目を擦り、不規則に転がりながら迎えたツアー初日、自分でもびっくりするくらい何故かライブが楽しかった。あまりライブは得意ではない、という自意識をかき消すように皆の歓声が上がり、わたしは苦もなくそれに応えることができた。おや、と訝しむ間もなかった。他の仕事が全て爆散したわけでもなく、赤い文字がわたし���ぐるぐるに取り巻く状況も全く変わっていないのに、ステージに立てば全く解放され、全てが自分を祝福してくれているように感じた。公演を重ねるにつれ、サイコロをチグハグにしていた糊が溶けていき、然るべき形にゆっくり整っていくようだった。決して悪いものではない。しかし自分の身に何が起きているのかよくわからない。

その答えはアリーナを終えてドーム公演に差し掛かり、アンコール最後の曲であるLOST CORNERにて車に乗りドームの内周を回るという、子供の頃のわたしが知れば目ん玉飛び出るようなことをしでかしたタイミングで全てはっきりした。手を伸ばせば容易に触れられる距離に皆がいて、その殆どがはち切れんばかりの笑顔で迎えてくれたのだった。わたしはその瞬間、ほとんど雷に打たれるように、あなたたち今までどこ��いたの、と思った。鶴の恩返しみたいに独りの部屋で次また次と音楽を作り続けてきたわたしにとって、あの近さは、何もかも隔たりを超えて、「ここに連れてきてくれた皆」を感じるのに十分すぎたのだ。

こう書くと、過去今までのライブに来てくれた人を悲しませるかもしれない。十何年も活動してきて今更？とも思うだろうし、実際わたしもそう思う。エウレ〜カ！じゃねえよと自分で自分の頭を引っ叩きたくなる。ただ、何も斜に構えて受け流しながらライブをやってきたわけじゃない。わたしはわたしなりに精一杯向き合ってきたつもりではある。来てくれる人が居なければライブが成立しないことなんて重々承知だったし、その都度ありがてえなと独りごちていたが、そんな何のこともない事実を強く実感するのにこれだけ時間がかかってしまうのがわたしだった。屈託のない笑顔の人も、居心地悪そうな真顔で棒立ちの人も、あるいは早く帰りたそうに不機嫌な顔をしている人も、全て皆わたしをここに連れてきてくれたのだとちゃんと理解できるタイミングがついに今だった。

窓の外を雲がゆっくり流れている。GQuuuuuuXにかこつけて買ったメタルビルドのケンプファーがこちらにバズーカを向けている。全てのライブ公演と皆の顔を鮮明に思い返せる。角膜の一センチ先ではなく、非常口を知らせる緑のライトでもない、その間にいる皆と、今回わたしは初めてちゃんと目を合わすことができた。成長して大人になるうちに、いろんなものを取りこぼしてきたけれど、長く続けていくうちに失うものはこれからも尽きないだろうけれど、そうでなければあの瞬間もなかったのだとすると、それはそれで。皆ずっとそこにいたんだね。来てくれて本当にありがとう。また会いましょう。

If you ever feel this way you can break the cycle by supporting another artist. Give feedback, share tools and tips, redline. This helps compound your own knowledge or even holds up a mirror to your strengths and weaknesses with greater fidelity.

One of the best experiences for me was hiring a junior concept artist even though we were not looking for one. We were only hiring autonomous seniors. I was in a bit of a rut like this with my personal work but helping her helped me.

It’s also okay to explore new styles and not finish anything, but it shouldn’t be because you weren’t immediately amazing at it and you were comparing to others. We’re all running our own race, nobody is in front of you 👍
