ฌ Directing 101: The Fundamentals
/ A great director is first a storyteller. Everything starts with a crystal-clear vision of the story, tone, and emotion you want the audience to feel. Write it down. Sketch it. Obsess over it.
/ Pre-production is 80% of the job. Storyboard every key shot, scout locations, cast actors who get your vision, and build trust with your DP, production designer, and crew. Prep = freedom on set.
/ On set: Youโre the calm captain. Communicate simply and specifically. โMake this moment feel lonelyโ beats โact sadder.โ Block scenes with your actors first, then light and shoot. Protect the energy.
/ Master the frame. Know your lenses, composition, movement, and coverage. Every shot should serve the story โ not just look cool. Less coverage = stronger editing choices later.
/ Post is where you sculpt. Work closely with your editor to find the rhythm. Be ruthless with scenes that donโt serve the whole. Sound design and score will often save (or break) your film.
Bottom line: Directing isnโt about barking orders. Itโs leadership + taste + relentless problem-solving.
