Where is Dasuki now?

He is currently free and not in prison. He was arrested on December 1, 2015, by the Department of State Services (DSS) on corruption charges related to the $2.1 billion arms procurement scandal. He was held in DSS custody in Abuja. He spent more than four years in detention, from late 2015 until December 24, 2019. This was despite being granted bail multiple times by various Nigerian court judges including the Federal High Court and the Abuja High Court judges. The government and the DSS repeatedly defied or delayed compliance with bail orders.

He was Freed by the DSS on December 24, 2019, on federal government directive under Buhari who also prompted his initial arrest. He has since been attending court as a free man and on bail conditions, with re-arraignments lasting since 2019 up to last year.

The numerous Courts that heard his case including the ECOWAS Court in 2016 described his prolonged detention as unlawful and arbitrary. He was never convicted in any of the cases; the trials have been ongoing with delays for over a decade.

Suspecting Fun Fact: Late Sheik Abubakar Mahmund Gumi was a very close associate and friend of Dasuki’s father, the 18th Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki and the late Sheik is the father of the present controversial Sheik Abubakar Gumi. 😎🤓

This is Sambo Dasuki, one of the Nigerians that messed up the security of Nigeria.

He is a retired Nigerian Army Colonel and former National Security Adviser (2012–2015) under President Goodluck Jonathan. He is the son of the 18th Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki, who was sultan of sokoto from 1988 to 1996 and was disposed by General Sani Abacha.

Sambo Dasuki was Commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 1974. He participated in the 1983 and 1985 coups, served as Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to General Ibrahim Babangida until 1988. He was compulsorily retired in 1993 under the Sani Abacha regime amid coup allegations and his royal family tensions. After his retirement, he was self-exiled until 2001 when he returned to Nigeria and was appointed Managing Director of the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Limited (NSPMC) in Abuja. He resigned in protest over its controversial privatization under President Olusegun Obasanjo and then retired into private business and he did not take up another public position until his appointment as National Security Adviser in June 2012 by Goodluck Jonathan.

He was arrested in 2015 under the Buhari administration for alleged looting and diversion of funds around $2.1 billion or more in some estimates following a presidential committee’s probe into arms procurement under the previous Jonathan administration. 🧵

$2.1 billion as at 2012-2015 could have secured a lot of cool gadgets that would make us stronger as a country. Gadgets such as

- Over 120 Attack Helicopters, the Mi-35 Helicopter at $15 million would have given the army superior control of the skies

- Dozens of Over Light and Close Air Support Fighters/Trainers could have been secured like the A-29 Tucano at $20 million per unit or the MiG-29 fighters at $30 million per unit.

- Drones, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and Radars: Dozens of surveillance/strike drones, UAVs and ground radars for early warning could have been secured. As at 2012, a unit would cost as low as $100,000 to $2 million depending on the model and product

- Guns and Ammunition could have been secured, even the welfare of the average soldier could have being bettered if only if men like Dasuki weren't corrupt

In 2010, the Independence Day bombing at Eagle Square Abuja was the start of what would become a series of terrorist attacks over the next few decades, then came on December 24, 2010, the Christmas Eve bombings with bombings targeting churches in Jos and Maiduguri, The insurgency intensified dramatically during Jonathan’s tenure (2010–2015), with major incidents like the June 2011 Abuja police HQ bombing, the first ever suicide attack in Nigeria and the August 2011 UN building bombing in Abuja.

Dasuki was made NSA shortly after all these attacks and for most of this period, the defense budget kept growing bigger to curb the insurgency and somehow, the money meant to fight these abnormalities in our security as a nation was looted by a few privileged beings under Dasuki’s watch. The missing defense funds involved “phantom contracts” for helicopters, jets, ammunition, and other equipment that were either not delivered or grossly inflated, in this period the Nigerian army became weaker and most of its front fighting warriors lost their morale.
