No one is arguing that faith is unnecessary and that ethnicity is sufficient.

Many promises were clearly made to the ethnic tribe, which is why I say “component.”

The problem with replacement theology is that it redefines terms and disregards authorial intent. For example, when Jeremiah 31:31 says a covenant would be made with Israel and Judah, the replacement theologian will say, “the Church is Israel and Judah.” And that is where we will disagree, as that is not what Jeremiah meant. That’s what anachronistic readers in later centuries assert. I don’t believe the original context should be reinterpreted to mean something other than its original meaning.

God can keep his promises to ethnic Israel, while demanding faith, and incorporating the nations (the wild branches) into the covenant tree. He can do all of that and none of it contradicts.

[Scripture Speaks @scripturesvoice]

@pbcmike98 @DrGladd Is it your contention that there is no ethnic component to any of the promises God has made?

[Scripture Speaks @scripturesvoice]

@pbcmike98 @DrGladd Not confused. 9:6-8 doesn’t erase 9:1-5. Paul’s making a nuanced argument that is often flattened

A sentence now circulating as comfort in the church: prayer doesn't change the situation; it changes me so I can handle the situation. It quietly retires the God of the Psalms.

The lament psalms are covenant appeals. The sufferer pleads with the King to stop hiding his face and to act: hear the cry, see the affliction, arise, judge, vindicate. The form presupposes a Suzerain who intervenes in the history of his vassals in answer to their cry. Abel's blood cries from the ground, and it is heard. Israel groans under Pharaoh, and God hears, remembers his covenant, and comes down (Ex 2:24). Hannah asks, and the LORD remembers her — Samuel is the situation changed. Hezekiah weeps and receives fifteen years. Nineveh repents and the announced judgment is lifted.

Scripture knows the petition refused. Paul pleads three times and the thorn remains. But the refusal arrives as a King's answer — "My grace is sufficient for you" — spoken to a real request by a God who could have granted it. A refused petition still confesses the throne. The aphorism confesses something else: that God's settled part is inaction, and prayer's whole efficacy is the petitioner's adjustment to it. Deism with a devotional accent — the King pensioned off, the vassal left alone to manage himself.

Prayer does change the one who prays. It changes him because he has been heard by the living God, who has bound himself by covenant to hear, and whose answers — granted, deferred, and refused alike — are acts of his reign. A church taught to expect only self-change has stopped asking. It calls the surrender maturity.

@5PointBaptist Good post!

When do you see this occurring?

“Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power.”

Earlier this week, our dear brother Samuel Sey @SlowToWrite was en route to appear on our podcast when he got detained by ICE. Samuel is from Canada, and has been living here as a legal resident of the United States. We are confident this clerical mistake will be fixed, but this has been a terrible experience for his family.

Please consider supporting his lovely wife Annie and their three small children as they deal with the legal and living expenses of this terrible ordeal.

If you know Samuel, you know what a good man of character he is. So many of us have been blessed by his writing and ministry. Please help! https://t.co/eoAQwwHpfK

@beready4rapture @Mish_K_ @DineshDSouza Amen! I’m a simple man too. When I see clear promises I trust it will happen just as it says.

[Scripture Speaks @scripturesvoice]

@DrAlanKurschner @HE_is_coming_37 Do you not view Revelation 20 to 21 as chronological?

[Scripture Speaks @scripturesvoice]

@DrAlanKurschner So true 👍

Here’s another trope: Restorationists believe that all Jews will be saved on the basis of their ethnicity.

Anyone who says this is hardly worth responding to. They’re not generally in pursuit of understanding the truth.

[Scripture Speaks @scripturesvoice]

I’ll give you my thoughts to consider, Root.

The Jewish believer in Jerusalem were zealous for Torah. Acts 21:20. Pretty shocking to hear but it’s the truth and Paul didn’t issue a correction. In fact, the Jewish Council in Acts 15 had nothing to do with whether believers in general should be circumcised or observe all of Torah’s ordinances; it was convened to determine what to do with Gentiles who apparently were receiving the Holy Spirit. Did they need to be circumcised? Did they need to essentially become Jews in order to join the covenant community? The answer was a resounding no.

They didn’t see Torah as contrary to the gospel in the way that Christians do today. They did recognize that it was Christ who saved them, not their Torah observance. At least, this is true of the Apostles and those who were true disciples. They knew that it was Christ who saved them but Paul was not conscious stricken because he likely didn’t see participating in a purification ritual as contrary to the gospel.

If all of this sounds strange, the history of it checks out.

What is a biblical theology of the care for the poor? The answer is the individual operating under the guidance of biblical revelation from a God who hates poverty and injustice. The answer is not the empowerment of a corruptible state. That is the secular God-less answer. We ought not baptize the secular answer to make it appear biblical; that is a deceit.
