“In this song, I was thinking of Amelia Earhart and addressing it from one solo pilot to another… reflecting on the cost of being a woman and having something you must do.” – Joni, in conversation with the Los Angeles Times. Watch her 1983 performance of “Amelia” in honor of Amelia Earhart’s birthday today.
Shocked to learn of the passing of my friend and mentor Susan Alcorn. There aren't many of us who play weird improvised pedal steel, and Susan was our hero and inspiration. I was just emailing her with questions yesterday. She was always so generous. May her memory be a blessing.
Incredibly tragic news of Susan Alcorn's passing. I had the honor of sharing two bills with her this past weekend, and appreciated everything she did: her sublime artistry; her speaking about her repertoire, and especially about music a protest; and her kind, warm, easygoing way.
Ivo and i had a duo session today --will be over a year before it comes out -- next years release will be the Ivo with the Matthew Shipp String Trio --so will be a while before this duo comes out --but anyway to the duo we recorded today --going into the session i had no expectations -- thought it would be good -maybe some refinement -etc etc --but when Ivo came in and was warming up before the session --i noticed his sound had a new stronger center to it i had never heard --kind of like a complete integration of all the components of his sound into a centralized concept of the sound --at that point you could play the most mundane things from practice books and method books and it does not have a school boy sound ,it sounds like it is generated from your central nervous system --it is a mesh of a physical instrument and a persons physicality and mental sphere that so few people reach --i heard it in Ivo as he was warming up in a way i have never heard before --all the aspects of time and space merged in his sound--it is hard to explain -Ivo has ascended to a new place -i mentioned it to him and he said his sax repair man made a similar comment to him
as far as me on the recording i tapped into the Divine Feminine --yup i was fucking talking to Mother Mary herself -- -- maybe it's all the drones but something is going on -- i was out of my body and in direct contact with the other -- Ivo and i outdid ourselves which is hard to do considering the heights we have reached in the duo --this duo is not of this world--Fucking Amen--Matt Shipp
