Ireland has been strongly supportive of Ukraine throughout all the years of Russia’s war against our independence. Despite the country’s neutral status, Ireland has not remained neutral in its feelings. I thanked Taoiseach @MichealMartinTD for this during our meeting in Dublin.

We discussed Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union over the next six months. During this period, Ukraine hopes to open five clusters and make substantive progress in the negotiations. We also need to take additional steps in security cooperation, primarily regarding a European anti-ballistic program.

Today, we began discussions with Ireland on cooperation in the field of drones. I proposed to Ireland our Drone Deal format, which allows for the establishment of direct and effective cooperation on the most advanced technologies tested in war.

We also discussed additional sanctions steps against Russia that could help bring a real end to this war closer. Thank you, Ireland!

Fish in Utrecht had a problem. They were piling up against a 400-year-old canal lock every spring with nowhere to go. Predators found them. Many didn't make it.

Two ecologists fixed this with the Visdeurbe, or "fish doorbell."

They mounted an underwater camera on the Weerdsluis lock and built a website where anyone on Earth can watch the livestream and press a button when they see fish waiting at the gate. The lock keeper gets notified and opens it when enough people have rung in.

In 2024, over 20 million people tuned in. The doorbell was pressed 150,000 times by viewers in the Netherlands, Germany, the US, the UK, and dozens of other countries. Perch, bream, pike, rudd, catfish, and eels made it through to their spawning grounds upstream.

A centuries-old infrastructure problem was solved by a camera, a website, and strangers on the internet who wanted to help a fish get where it was going.

The site is visdeurbel dot nl. Migration season runs through spring. The fish doorbell season has come to an end for 2026, but they'll be back online March 1, 2027. See you next season!

Just got off the phone with my college roommate.

His daughter was diagnosed with leukemia in January.

He has insurance. Good insurance. The kind you feel safe having.

7 months later:
Savings: wiped out. 401k: cashed early. Penalties and all. House: refinanced to cover the gaps insurance decided weren’t their problem.

He told me he’s not the same person anymore.

Said watching your child fight for her life while simultaneously fighting an insurance company over coverage codes does something to you that doesn’t go away.

They did everything right.
Two incomes. No debt. Responsible their whole lives.

One diagnosis undid all of it in 7 months.

And somewhere a health insurance CEO is getting a $30 million bonus this quarter.
