Bear with me as I go "founder mode" (derogatory).
The project I've been working on was featured by the App Store today, so figured it was a good time to explain it in my first ever "🧵". It's called Postcard and it helps you answer the v real question: "what should I eat today"
Today, we’re announcing our $5.5M Seed round to build the first human data marketplace.
Backed by Sebastian Thrun (Founder of Waymo), Aglaé (Venture Fund of Bernard Arnault), K5 Global, Diplo, Parable VC, Cox Exponential (CX2), Daniel Greenberg (Founder of MSCHF), Harrison Shih (DoorDash Labs), Kent Lacob (Owner of Golden State Warriors), and more.
This brings our total financing to $9 million. (Thread)
Excited to announce the first commercial-scale diffusion language model---Mercury Coder. Mercury runs at 1000 tokens/sec on Nvidia hardware while matching the performance of existing speed-optimized LLMs.
Mercury introduces a new approach to language generation inspired by image and video generation systems like MidJourney and Sora. This approach is significantly more efficient (faster and cheaper) to run that existing LLMs, and reduces the cost of AI inference by 10x.
Mercury Coder also achieves comparable performance to speed-optimized frontier models like Claude Haiku and GPT4o-mini. However, it is much more hardware-efficient because it uses a parallel generation mechanism that takes advantage of GPUs. This makes the model much faster or cheaper to run (more users can be served on the same hardware).
You can try it today in our playground!

My fifth & final update from #cannes2024 is now live! I give a few final highlights before recapping the Closing Ceremony and responding to the Jury Prizes.
I’ve had such a blast writing these dispatches. Thanks to David Chen for granting me the platform. https://t.co/F0GACkyKzD

Last night, I attended the premiere of MEGALOPOLIS. The film itself is a bewildering, bloated mess with *occasional* glimpses of brilliance—but the communal experience of watching it at Cannes was a 10/10. I wrote about it for Decoding Everything: https://t.co/xNV2n5Wvd7
@filmspotting My choice to have SAMURAI beat out SINGIN single-handedly catapulted me from the high 200s in ranking to double digits! Assuming REAR WINDOW wins (and I do assume it will), I shouldn’t have nearly as embarrassing a run as I expected to.
I’d understand it more if not for the juggernaut that is NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. It’s a beloved film, of course, but the degree to which it’s considered an all-timer feels very tied with the sort of cinephile who would pick RIO BRAVO or PANCHALI. The combo of both feels surprising.
.@filmspotting my decision to have 12 ANGRY MEN lose to PATHER PANCHALI is continuing to destroy my bracket. Who are these voters, and do they listen to the show?!
Where I landed: Eternal Sunshine holds up beautifully, and has plenty of self-awareness about Joel’s motivated reasoning. But as a love-hungry teenager in 2004, I drew all the wrong lessons. I wrestled with the two films in this essay, if you’re curious: https://t.co/EZk9xFAUvu
@filmspotting@LarsenOnFilm@samvanhallgren really loved your conversation about Eternal Sunshine, especially the focus on Clementine’s agency vs Joel’s imagination. I grappled with that recently too, spurred by Past Lives and its very different depiction of fate / knowability…
As a last farewell to 2023, I put together a bonus piece for my blog. This is a lightweight companion to the meatier Decoding Everything essay, including:
* An 11th bonus pairing
* A supplemental 1950s "menu" in honor of @filmspotting's Madness tournament
