🎚️ My tips for mixing bass.

1. Sidechain from kick with multiband compressor, whole band below 100-150hz. I always do it to avoid bass disappear completely and just give room to kick in the lows.

2. Possibly you can use a second sidechain from kick, broadband compressor, a few db. Rarer but can be useful on some long kicks especially.

ℹ️ All sidechain compressors are at fast settings

3. Tape saturation if needed warmth and richness. I use Oxide Tape you know it. Blackbox HG2 or Vertigo VSM-3 to add more aggressive richness.

4. Heavier distortion if needed to cut through (Fabfilter Saturn, Decapitator)

5. soothe2 to remove low resonances (I do it very often because most bass tracks I get are muddy). It works great.

6. Cut with EQ 150-200 hz to remove low mid muddiness.

7. Adjust sub frequencies by reference and spectrum analyzer if you don’t have a full range system.

8. dbx160 is a great compressor for bass. 1176 and Distressor recommended also.

9. Sidechain melody and vocals from bass using soothe2 or multiband compressor.

10. Find yourself one bass enhancing plugin, highly recommend Low End Focus from iZotope Ozone. Works like charm.

11. Make sure you have energy in EVERY bass range: sub bass (if production considers), low bass, mid bass, high bass. Or you will lose translation.

12. If higher frequencies of bass are not audible in the mix, cut them.

13. Cut side information from bass on the master channel if production doesn’t consider stereo bass.

14. Pay special attention how your bass sound when you solo Side signal. Muddiness and rumble there will do twice as more harm.

15. Make sure nothing becomes quieter when you turn on bass. Making sure it doesn’t mask anything.
