Sebastian is running for state delegate in District 19 to improve our schools, protect our seniors, and help Marylanders struggling to afford the basics.
Honored to earn the endorsement of @CASAinAction! With 173,000 members, this electoral powerhouse is critical in electing progressive change leaders who can produce justice. Together, we will advocate for policies that help immigrant and working families in District 19 thrive.
Kids are cheap to insure. They get better. And if we give children a solid start we are going to get that money back in taxes as they become productive adults. This is an *amazing* idea. And it should go till 21 or 25.
New: We knew there’s been a spike in killings inside Maryland prisons; but how bad is it? We sought data from every state, and Maryland’s prisoner homicide rate was second among the 42 that responded

This story is crazy.
It would appear Trump admin officials rigged their nationally televised high school civics contest to keep a young man from a Sikh family out of the finalists.

Mamdani: In a win for every ice cream lover across New York City, we will work with the state to do away with the frozen dessert permit that requires restaurants to seek out a superfluous second permit for what they’re already doing: serving food.
No more treat-sploitation, as we say.
Right now, barbershops need three licenses to cut hair: one to be a barber, one to own the shop, and one from the city on top of both.
The state of affairs is frankly anti-fade, and we will not stand for it, which is why we will work with the state to streamline these licenses as well.
And to the bingo enthusiasts out there, for too long, the potential earnings of a hot streak at bingo have been capped by arcane rules that no longer reflect how the game is actually being played.
With OPEN, DCWP will remove unnecessary regulations, including prize limits.
These are just a few of the improvements we are proud to announce today as we make it clear we are in the pocket of Big Abuela.
ICE agents entered a kindergarten classroom to detain a five-year-old child
His teacher stood in the doorway and was arrested for obstruction. In court, the judge dismissed the charge, ordered expungement, and referred the incident for review.
The wife of Joan Sebastian Durán Guerrero, Karolina Rojas, speaks for the first time after her husband was fatally shot by ICE agents on Monday in Biddeford, Maine.
In tears, Rojas says that every time her 3-year-old daughter Dulce asks for “Papá” she doesn’t have the strength to tell her that he is not coming back.
THE CRISIS BEHIND THE HOUSING CRISIS
In today's NYT piece, I wrote about how the housing fight is both about housing *and* retirement. We made the house do two jobs at once, and it's pitting the old against the young.
His name was Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero.
He was a young father who deserved life and dignity. He was our neighbor.
His daughter deserved to grow up with a father.
If you can, I ask you to please contribute to help Johan’s family as they navigate this unspeakable tragedy.

Think about how easy it would have been for a president to not screw this term up. Take office in '25, extend the tax cuts, then get out of the way. Done.
Instead, we have a president who, at every turn, has dramatically exacerbated every problem he was elected to solve. Higher inflation (tariffs, fiscal recklessness, Iran debacle), higher rates (interference w/ the Fed), endless wars, plus some of the most disgusting corruption the office has ever seen (swamp?)
Judged against a passive benchmark, this is without question the worst performance of any president in U.S. history.
By the way, Susan Collins was the deciding vote to give ICE another $70 billion WITHOUT A SINGLE REFORM — and that vote is coming back to haunt her right now.
I'm just saying, I don't think it is too much to ask immigration enforcement to drive marked cars, where a uniform and uncover their faces like literally every other law enforcement agency in the country.
In same week Senate considers Trump's personal lawyer Todd Blanche to lead DOJ, it votes on Trump's personal lawyer Matthew Schwartz to Second Circuit seat. Rewarding loyalists with top law enforcement jobs & lifetime judgeships is offensive to the justice system & our democracy.
The same "Never Comply" crowd that won't change their thermostat, wear a mask, or use a paper straw turns into "comply or die" the second masked federal agents start gunning down people on American streets.
Don't let them gaslight you into thinking they stand for liberty.
Another cold blooded execution by ICE today in Maine, just days after the murder in Houston. The only acceptable position for politicians is eliminating the agency. Do not for one minute tolerate any politician calling for "training" or "body cameras." The demand is clear.
The first major federal housing package in 30 years is now law. It combines over 50 bills, and puts the federal government on the side of legalizing housing:
1. Cuts some federal funding from expensive places that don't allow housing and gives it to places that do. The first federal carrots and sticks tied to housing results!
2. Removes the requirement for a metal chassis from manufactured housing, saving ~$5-10K per home and making multifamily manufactured housing possible
3. Rewards zoning reform with grants to support schools, sewers, and other needs
4. Rewards cities that create preapproved building plans so builders can build without delay
5. Federal guidelines for single-stair buildings (!)
6. Federal guidelines for zoning reform
7. Exempts infill and other low-impact housing from environmental review
8. Makes it easier for HUD to get money out the door after disasters without months of rulemaking
9. Ends duplicate inspections for housing funded by multiple federal programs
10. Updates the HOME program to remove blockers for federally-funded affordable housing
11. Creates grants to repair old housing stock
12. Allows banks to invest in more affordable housing
13. Streamlines rehab of old public housing buildings and adding mixed-income homes
14. Encourages financing changes to enable modular housing that lowers construction costs
15. Requires databases of local publicly-owned land that could be used for housing
16. Preserves build-to-rent homebuilding
...plus 42 other sections, most a labor of love from a staffer and their boss trying to tackle the largest cost Americans face each month
