To all the Catholics that keep saying Peter was the first pope, and therefore by that assertion, the catholic church was formed or at least its beginning is traced back to this biblical reference in Matthew 18, you must consider the truth. Here is the truth:

Biblical Evidence that Christ, Not Peter, is the Foundation:

1.Jesus as the True Rock
•1 Corinthians 3:11 – “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
•Ephesians 2:20 – The Church is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.”
•Psalm 118:22 (quoted in Matthew 21:42) – “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” This prophecy refers to Jesus, not Peter.
2.Peter’s Role was Important, but Not Supreme
•Peter was a leader, but he was fallible (Galatians 2:11-14, where Paul rebukes him).
•In Acts 15, the Jerusalem Council was led by James, not Peter, when making doctrinal decisions.
•Matthew 18:18 gives all the apostles—not just Peter—the authority to “bind and loose.”
3.Nowhere Does Scripture Establish a Papacy
•The New Testament describes a shared leadership model, with elders (presbyters) and overseers (bishops) guiding churches (Acts 14:23, Titus 1:5).
•There is no biblical evidence that Peter had exclusive authority or passed on a unique office.

The Catholic Claim is Self-Serving. The idea that Peter was the first pope serves the Catholic Church’s institutional authority, not the actual teachings of Jesus. If Jesus had intended to establish a papal office, we would expect clear, repeated instructions in the New Testament—not a single verse that can be interpreted differently.

The true foundation of the Church is Christ, not Peter. While Peter played a significant role, the claim that he was the first pope is a later theological development, not a biblical doctrine. The authority of the Church comes from Jesus alone, and its true foundation is His identity as the Christ, the Son of the Living God—the very confession Peter made in Matthew 16:16.
