Be kind - you never know what someone else is going through. Especially true for therapists and other professionals whose jobs require them to set aside their personal “stuff” to emotionally support others.
HUGE NEWS!
United Nations & World Health Organisation new report stating that the medical model of mental health needs to be overhauled; and that psychiatric diagnosis, labelling & pathologising people who are traumatised, abused, in poverty, & oppressed impacts human rights.
@DoctorCamden This is bringing all other questions and thoughts to my mind RE: "what is a survivor" - interesting to consider what types of things I've immediately identified with being a survivor of, vs some things that took YEARS for that to really sink in for me.
@DoctorCamden Definitely consider it trauma especially given the lingering effects it can have. Personally have a hard time using the term "purity culture survivor" for myself (given my own other history and survivorships) but 100% support when that term feels like it fits for others.
Not surprisingly, IBLP was not trauma informed in this teaching. Blaming a victim as “equally guilty” as her rapist if she does not “cry out for help”. It’s called the freeze response and it’s the most common one I hear in my practice from sexual assault survivors.
Catching up on my @ISSWSH genitopelvic pain course. So thankful for everyone doing all of this research and providing these trainings. Loved seeing #EMDR listed as one of the recommended psychological treatments. We need more of the sex med community to know about this!
I remain convinced: Parents, the best gift you can give your children is to heal from your own trauma. Don’t pass any more on to them. Be a cycle breaker. Heal. Be well. Set boundaries. Communicate clearly. Have healthy relationships. Give THOSE gifts to your whole family. 🎁
