I think the worst parts of the third world are defined by a lack of debate and a lack of self-criticism. I agree with your take on the EU too.

But surely you’d agree there’s comparatively less of a concept of bringing shame to the family name in the west? On the whole I prefer the west but we don’t have to abandon self-criticism, one the best aspects of the west imo.

I would never have expected them to be relatives of someone like that.

This is unthinkable to much of the Eastern world, where obligations to your family would register as far more important than your own individual wealth.
